New car thread
New car thread
I aim to make this longer than Munki's deliberations. Well, it might end up that way because my lease doesn't end until July.
First option is to buy my Allroad off the lease company if they give me a price of around £25k. However, I have already budgeted the funds to doing two new bathrooms and a new kitchen, so that is not going to be for long term ownership; and if I keep it until 2019 then I bet I'll have lost another £5k in depreciation so that's one bathroom down already
Hence thinking of something cheaper. Ideally I'd get an X70 BMW X5 LCI 40d in SE trim with lots of options; that is going to be £15k-16k so realistically not much of a saving over buying the Allroad - not enough for two bathrooms and a kitchen anyway. Still a possibility if I found a bargain but having really enjoyed my old E39 and E61 5-series Tourings which cost just over £5k, I'd like something closer to that sort of price.
Current ideas are a late original shape CLS (compromise is that it's not an estate); I'd go for a CLS350 CDI Grand Edition for the nice alloys and more powerful engine. Seen these for £7-8k (2010ish) and at this sort of age, it's not that hard to find a one-owner cherished car. Always like the original shape CLS so if I'm ever going to have one, now seems to be the time.
Alternatively a Volvo V60 D5 - this ticks more of the boxes (4wd version is available, and the estate shape is more useful to me but it's not particularly big). This is the head over heart option.
Any other interesting suggestions for up to, say, £8k? I've really gone off the W212 E-class estate after going to see two; they just don't grab me at all. I'd like the moon on a stick, please... actually, not quite that but something with no more than ~120k miles, 2009 onwards, low number of owners, estate or SUV, auto, 4wd, 250+bhp and not £500 per year to tax.

How about a nice Allroad? https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified ... 000&page=2
Re: New car thread
I could get an A6 Allroad of the previous generation to mine too... however, I think that's a recipe for dissatisfaction!
A 2010-ish Audi A4 Avant quattro 3.0 TDI is possible. Smaller and sportier so without being too much more of the same but old.

Re: New car thread
XC60 or X3? 3 series xdrive estate? Think you’ll be disappointed with all of them though after your Allroad.
Cheers,

Re: New car thread
I bloody love a big-engined SE spec BMW.
Re: New car thread
That's the thing - never particularly liked the X3 in comparison to the X5 and they aren't that cheap (the original shape is a bit old anyway) so I'd just stump up the extra for an X5. 3-series xDrive starts at £11k or so for a high mile 320d SE; no thanks. XC60 is a possibility though. Volvos appeal because they have quite nice interiors and don't have a negative image.

Re: New car thread
There’s three 3 series (black and red SE, one grey M-sport) on Autotrader for between £8000 and £10k. 89k, 101k and 110k mileages.
Cheers,

Re: New car thread
Not automatics. No way I'd have a manual car as my main daily driver now.
And I look at the one auto 320d xDrive Touring just under £10k in a terrible colour scheme with no options and I just couldn't. Why would you over a cheaper Merc CLS? I'll just get winter tyres and use the Tacuma for anything big.

It's a nice colour but I've had two of them before, I know the gearboxes are a little less than perfectly reliable and I fancy this: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified ... 3315116507
Re: New car thread
Why have you gone off the W212? What's different in 'real life' (you've seen 2) that you didn't like on the computer screen?

Even with the luxury pack (nappa leather, artico dashboard and alcantara headlining) they feel quite hair-shirt inside. I appreciate that they do have some of the air of a W124 which the W211 lacked, but there's just nothing massively desirable about being in one.

You seem to have linked to a diesel.Jobbo wrote: ↑Fri Apr 13, 2018 12:29 pm It's a nice colour but I've had two of them before, I know the gearboxes are a little less than perfectly reliable and I fancy this: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified ... 3315116507

Re: New car thread
Sorry Dave, I'd rather have a diesel CLS than a V8 ML
Re: New car thread
Apart from the "wood" that's really nice. Sounds like you've pretty much set your mind on a CLS so you should probably get one.Jobbo wrote: ↑Fri Apr 13, 2018 12:29 pm It's a nice colour but I've had two of them before, I know the gearboxes are a little less than perfectly reliable and I fancy this: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified ... 3315116507

Re: New car thread
Lots of car for £7k there. 272bhp and much torque - nice.
Left over crest; tightens.
Re: New car thread
I'd set my mind on an E350 estate beforehand. I think the compromise of losing the boot is better for the looks, interior and general fact that I like the CLS, while the E-class was simply a box-ticker which was good value.ZedLeg wrote: ↑Fri Apr 13, 2018 1:47 pmApart from the "wood" that's really nice. The wood in a CLS is almost always matte finished and looks stunning. They're leagues ahead of an equivalent saloon.
Re: New car thread
Can I remind you of what you said when I was thinking of getting a CLS and you wanted the E class? "Why pay extra for what is essentially an E class in a pretty frock"Jobbo wrote: ↑Fri Apr 13, 2018 1:57 pmI'd set my mind on an E350 estate beforehand.
