The Tesla (S) I drove had regen set to max, so Brakes weren’t needed for 90% of pootling about. Service sept confirmed they replace as many discs for corrosion as they do worn out.

Mine is the same, I only need the brakes for the last few feet of coming to a total stop or if hooning about

The bite of my brakes where a bit odd when new but I did a pad bed in run after which they felt a lot better, i wonder if they have some anti rust coating on them out of the factory

will be a novelty having brakes that last, i avg'd 11k miles on pads and rotors on the RS3 and 24k on the A45

Bit of a boring “detailing” type post for most here but I wanted to see what all this crap Tesla paint is about (and maybe some others here are curious) so gave the car a wash and brought it in, and wiped the car down with IPA solution. This will remove the thick layer of wax Tesla have already poorly applied plus reveal what they have tried cover up. It’s also an important step to make your new wax adhere properly.

Starting with the front bumper I couldn’t tell what section they repaired (the staff claimed they didn’t know the specifics...) but the bonnet and front bumper had the best paintwork. The only bad bit is the inside of the vents hasn’t had enough paint applied so you can see it fade to pink.
Image
The sharp crease above the rear number plate has the same issue
Image

There’s the odd sanding marks in random places
Image
Also there are a few 50p coin sized areas where the paint has been sanded (denibbed) but not polished again
Image

But maybe not having it sanded is preferable to this buffing mess
Image
Someone went ham with a rotary polisher and cutting compound here.

Now for the more interesting bits - as far as I can tell the car has had its rear and sides resprayed too.
Image
Someone taped up half the light cluster before getting tired and not bothering with the rest (why would you even tape halfway across in the first place) then just sprayed clear coat on the rear bumper and got overspray on the light.

This is the passenger side door, it was painted, probably poorly as it has water spots, then sanded back but not enough and then had more clear coat applied over it
Image
It looks like snowflakes if you look closely. How pretty.
Image

The driver’s side door is better, they sanded it enough this time before adding more clear, but they just forgot to polish it so it feels like sandpaper and looks matte.
Image

I’ve told my dad to not give it back to them to mend as I don’t believe they have the skill or ability to repair it (and that’s not just Tesla, that’s any car dealership which doesn’t outsource their work to a detailer...). A 2 stage polish will fix almost all of it, with the odd wet sand for the rest. Only doubts are with those “snowflakes” and obviously the bits where there’s not enough paint.
But at the end of the day it’s a daily driver so I won’t correct it either as you can’t ever keep a high mileage car in top condition (and if you did you’d run out of clear coat pretty quickly!) and they’re always too dirty to appreciate the work. It’s good enough from 6 feet away but it’s still sub average. I imagine the average punter won’t even care though...

I can't ever imagine sinking my own hard-earned into a Tesla when their QC is like that. It'd have to be a rental for me.

I'd certainly agree about the one touch windows and iffy seats. The Cobra seats in the Milltek modified Up GTI are worth looking at. Overall I'm still chuffed at its ability to entertain whilst only really sipping petrol. :D
They are very nice....but they're too bucket-y, and I want something more OEM looking. I've tried to get below 40mpg on a run...not managed it yet. Are you running on Premium unleaded? Or regular old 95? I was mildly surprised to have the fuel pump click before I'd even managed to get £35's worth in

Also, I had no idea that the Up GTi made last years ECOTY. Didn't realise they'd liked it that much.
They’ve even got the Up GTi in the latest issue’s MEGA HOT HATCH TEST
Good stuff, cheers Mike - although I disagree with the roll, it corners surprisingly flatly! (not Michael).

No ? Ste has a long history of spouting crap and being unable to accept he might be wrong. Remember the time he insisted the boot of his E53 was bigger than that of a Disco 4 ?

Anyway, maybe the harness thing was the last straw, but it can't have been the only reason for the flounce. So he clearly hates the rest of you too, not just me !

There does seam to be some inconstancy with Tesla paint, from my perspective, it’s a tool and it’s going to get abused by other people (car park dings etc) so as long as the external finish passes ‘WBAC’ inspection it’s fine, paint correction, PPF and detailing add nothing to the value if you PX to a dealer or sell to an online buyer, they work on book plus there % adjustment less remedial work. Options add very little to the value as well. Arnold Clark told me I didn’t even need to have washed it.

If you have something interesting / rare or of high value then it may be worth investing in the paintwork, or of you have OCD.

Is yours using up 20 miles of range per day/night just parked up? I don’t know if the car is just preheating itself since the cabin is at 19.5c whereas the garage is only 11c :? Checked the settings and it’s only meant cool the cabin if it gets over 40c.
Also can’t figure out how to update it, it was parked in the garage overnight so it had WiFi with advanced updates on but it’s still on version 9. I’ve now left it plugged in overnight since it’s just an iPhone on wheels right

In other news, a couple of mildly used CrossClimates in 14” should be heading my way from eBay.

Mine has very little parasitic charge, I also use % not range as range is a calculation and can be very inaccurate leading to some owners doing factory resets etc. I think of it as being as accurate as windows file copy times lol

To get updates connect to WiFi and enable the update beta mode or what ever it’s called, took about 3 days for mine to come through, you can schedule the update and the app tells you when it’s done

Mine kept going into valet mode but I think that was because I set the valet mode pin to the same as the drive pin - which is very important to set as the cards can be boosted to start the car like any keyless system, although there have been a couple of security patches since the model S was stolen like this recently on CCTV

I got a message last night saying the heating had been on 2 hours after I parked, no idea what i pressed to do that, turned it off on the app

Also apple warned me the Tesla app had been tracking my location constantly so I disabled that to when used

Yes. It's like rugby or football, cricket or tennis, men or women, whether salt & vinegar crisps come green or blue bags. You can't waver on these important topics. You have to blindly love one and be hyperbolically critical of the other.

Are you new at the internet or something ?? ;)

Well I finished off the car with a final coat of paste wax, sealed the wheels and callipers etc.
Having a closer look at it whilst buffing it is clear that the entire lower half has been resprayed, all the bolts underneath have red overspray as do the the undersides of the rear lights
Image
Weird.
I will say that the factory wax Tesla use is supremely impressive in hiding paintwork imperfections. I imagine it’s specifically designed to trick people for a few months before wearing off and showing all the flaws so customers that it’s part of the natural wear and tear. Of course this is why the white paint is also free now - lighter colours hide more flaws.

Anyhow I have a bunch of PPF film so set off to make a template for the front lights
Image
Only the most sophisticated techniques used here
But it did the job
Image
Now this one ended up being a fail as the model 3 lights are very big and curve almost 90 degrees so I couldn’t remove all the creases hence made another with 2 relief cuts which worked much better.
Image
Should hopefully stop it weathering the way lights do. You can always respray a front bumper but the lights tend to give away the age so maybe it will help.

While it might not matter for most owners, or the terms of the lease, it doesn't bode well for the long term appearance and just confirms many people's thoughts that they're designed to be disposable motoring. Which if turns out to be true isn't great for the 'green' credentials they try to sell them on.

It does make you wonder if they can't get something as basic as getting paint on the car right what other shortcuts and bodges are they making under the skin where you can't see it?

Not sure of % but on the actual battery graphic the battery lost probably 1/8 of the charge!
I can only find advanced for updates, will have to explore further.

Also is there a way to mess with the audio setting as right now I don’t think they’re good?

I also can't process the idea of a £60k car being disposable. A <£10k supermini maybe, but if one of these Teslas rots through in five years and is uneconomical to repair that's horrendous waste.

I get the feeling most mass produced cars have designed obsolescence in built, excessive parts costs kills off most cars long before there not actually viable to use.

I saw a post this morning where musk confirmed the battery is designed for 500k and the motor for 1 million miles, seams massive overkill if the bodies only good for 10 years

This owner is reporting circa 2% battery degradation at 50k miles

I suspect the more expensive the car the more likely it will be killed off early from the costs of parts, there have been some horror stories on piston heads of huge bills on large AMG / RS and M cars. A C63 owner this week reported a 9k bill for a rear diff on a car out of warranty
