Had the boxster major service while I waited today. Absolutely amazed at the guys at Porsche & Euro specialists. Did a job, knocked the air filter off as I've a pipercross and all in 3 hours. No messing. Unusual :D :D

Great price too.

It seems to come in through the rear lights and permeate into the cabin. Lots of condensation on the rear window. The Galaxie has multiple holes in the roof so it’s always lived under a cover but nonetheless, damp does creep in. And the Compact hasn’t been used properly since failing its MOT in Nov 2020  so it’s a bit musty and needs airing.
I mean, it won't help with full-blown leaks, but I've always used those moisture absorbers on any of my cars that don't get used very often. Changed/recharged every 4-7 days and massively helps.

Except on the Lotus. Mine actually never leaked as far as I could tell, yet I never really understood how Lotus mananged to design a car that always managed to freeze on the insisde.

Neighbors fleet update

Wanted to do brakes and a wheel bearing on his GT86 - sure I can lend a hand.

Get to the bearing, which is a self contained 'bearing and carrier that bolts to the hub' type, he's watched videos of Californians doing it on their clean, dry cars, the bearing carrier just pulls off after a few love taps with a rubber mallet.

I suspected that wouldn't the case, and after smashing the shit out of the old bearing carrier, yeah, that ain't moving without a slide hammer or air tools.

So, Halfords still open, maybe they'll have a slide hammer. Or a bearing puller. I'm not keen on the bearing puller idea as it's the wrong kind of pressure to get the stuck on piece of kit off - I suspected you'd want impulse from a slide hammer to break it free from the hub bits, not steady pushing force that might just pull the bearing out.... But Halfords don't do slide hammers, so neighbour decides to risk a bearing puller - his car, his shout.

Well, that bearing puller did an amazing job of getting the bearing out.... Of the carrier, which is still welded to the fucking hub

Ho hum, mobile mechanic with a decent torch and ideally an air hammer and a compressor in thier van is the likely answer to knock the bearing carrier lose, cos the car certainly ain't moving now  not like we can press the bearing back in, realistically.

So, definitely an interesting afternoon. He also had me drink the hoppy beers he had, as he doesn't like them. And help get some matted fur out of his cats coat, as his cat is very cool with me. So a diverse day of car and cat tweeking with varying results.

I think I'll get a slide hammer for future use.

Seven learning adventures for both of us out of ten

The reversing lights on the 320d are rubbish so ordered some new led ones. They arrived and were fitted today. They look good, don't throw any error codes and don't flash. Plus, they've got to be much brighter that the old bulbs 🤞😂

Mito has not liked being sat since before Christmas :?

One rear brake was firmly stuck on. The pad material had come off the backing and was getting wedged.

Got that sorted and took it for a short run today and decided to throw power steering errors and remove all assistance. The small steering wheel, quick rack, and being designed for power steering mean it’s incredibly heavy with no assistance. Hopefully just battery / charge related as just been for another drive and it’s been fine.

Ioniq EV TPMS complained on Saturday, I added some air and took it round the block, it stopped complaining.

Excuse to buy a digital pressure gauge as well, my eyesight wasn't enjoying trying to read my old pencil gauge in low light 😊

@integrale_evo might be worth cleaning the connections to the ePAS in case it's a mix of a bad connection and a slightly low battery - can't hurt (unless it's a ballache to get to, obviously)?

Took the mito to work, steering behaving and brakes stopped grumbling. However the gear lever is very slow / sticky moving side to side for some reason ( also noticed yesterday but forgot to mention )

It’s also gone from lovely and clean to disgusting and barely able to see the rear numberplate. I hate this time of year 😬

500e mot passed with flying colours 😎

Apart from Dave having to argue the case that no, it didn’t need and has never needed side repeaters.

Then on the way back to his workshop all the dash lights went off 😂. I’m hoping it’s the common fuse issue, they are bullet style fuses and they need twisting in their holders every year or so. As it’s been sat so long I’ll get some miles on it and then in the spring go to centre gravity to get a full alignment done.

The respray can wait, I want to drive the thing and make some noise!!!!!!

So it’s had……

Lower wiring harness replaced.
Alarm wiring re-done.
Front undertray fixed through bumper, I have a plan to add a small lip spoiler to this when the respray is done.
All new suspension arms, bushes, linkages, nuts, bolts, fittings etc.
New hard and soft brake lines.
New fuel lines.
New hydraulic lines.
Driveshafts stripped, painted and rebuilt, no issues before but was 30 year old grease.
Rear diff stripped, rebuilt and made pretty. (The diff was leak free and fine but looked tatty against the rest of the back end)
Hubs rebuilt with new bearings and abs sensors.
Rear prop tickled.
H+r lowering springs from period.
Lower rad support removed, blasted and painted.
Rear subframe blasted and painted.
Plastics underneath made pretty.
Exhaust heat shields blasted and treated.
Exhaust cladding replaced on down pipes.
New fancy tig welded rear exhaust hanger and front hanger.
A million other small jobs that turn it from a nice job to a fantastic job.

The below is due to my mistrust of a lot of overhauls. The Merc under seal is amazing, it’s virtually structural and can hide a lot of damage. Unless it’s a California/ Texas car then they all get creepy rust near the rear wheel well and in the inner arches. Also the whole back end is quite a complicated series of panels and shapes which hide sins as many w124 owners have found out. I wanted to be absolutely sure my car was structurally perfect as I didn’t know if I was going to keep this for life or sell it and do a 996 project. I’m pretty sure it’ll be a keeper though as I’m still really excited about driving it.

The entire underside stripped right back and investigated for rust and damage. Mainly this was on 4 studs which are spot welded on, spot welding promotes rust just where the contact is made.
A slight crack in the rear subframe area about 10mm long. There was also an area in the wheel well which was cut out and repaired properly and then tidied up lovely.

After that it has had about 5 coats of primer and stonechip and lanoguard.

It’s been nearly 14months in total, it’s cost double my upper limit due to scope creep and seeing how well it was turning out, I just wanted the entire car to look as good. I’m a picky git when it comes to mechanical work and each time I saw the finished article I was really happy. It’s the attention to detail I was paying for and I got it.

This is fantastic Dave. Congratulations, amazing work from Flewy as usual. Not comfortable with tickling your rear prop though, did he charge extra

Btw, replace all the fuses, surely your budget will stretch to that!

Looks awesome 8-)

Paint looks ok in the photo. It may be worth paying someone to do a proper machine polish and coating rather than pulling it apart again to paint ?

Looks amazing. What I think needs to happen next is a grand tour(ish) around the forum community for the opportunity to look it over and agree that it is indeed excellent. I'll stick the kettle on, let me know when you're on your way :D

Does look great, but I’d be interested in hearing the side repeater argument.

My understanding is you have to have them on anything built after April 1st 1986 unless you can see the front indicators when stood 1m to the side of the rear of the vehicle. Maybe the merc ones wrap around enough and reflect enough light internally to be able to do that?

I’d love to fit repeaterless wings to the e36s as they look so much cleaner without. So do e30 m3s tbh, but no way would I be able to argue the rear visibility thing with those 😂

No extra added to the invoice 😂

I have a box of new fuses at home, quality ones are actually tricky to find
