I said it before and I'll say it again, battery chargers and not loo roll are the new currency.

Merc update: done nearly 550miles on this tank of fuel and it’s showing remaining range of about 140 miles. The Volvo (departing tomorrow) would generally need filling up at 280 miles. Having a near 700 mile range is lovely.

With so little traffic it’s been easy to do direct speed vs mpg comparisons on my new commute. First oddity was discovering it’s basically uphill all the way to get there and downhill all the way home; yesterday was 38.2mpg on the way and 42.2mpg on the way home. That was on cruise control at 79/80 both ways.

Today I tried 85/90 on the cruise and got there 2 mins earlier for a 2mpg hit (really not worth it but nice to have solid proof). On the way home I sat at 76mph and the overall average for the round trip was just over 39mpg.

I get the feeling cruise control isn’t as economical as using your right foot because it’ll coast when you lift off; cruise basically never lets it do so. Further experimentation to be done. I’m liking the Merc anyway. It’s ideally suited to long motorway journeys; it’s a nice place to be and doesn’t raise the pulse en route.

Alarm going off today on the 330. Had this 8mo ago and at Sundayjumper's suggestion I checked out the bonnet switch - used WD40 on it. Was fine since.

Tried again today with proper contact cleaner, and stripping the switch apart. No luck though. I can't figure out why given it's spotless, but for the sake of a couple of quid I'll just order a new one. If I can...

Not a dig but what would you say if you got pulled over?

“I’m a lawyer god dammit, we will descend into chaos unless I reclaim mans tyranny and put it through the stern mangle of justice”

Then hit the officer in the face with a white cotton glove and drive off shouting obscenities in Latin.

I'd say, "Honestly officer, I've only had a few ales."

Or "Stay at least 6ft away from me!"

I haven't actually seen a single police car. Loads of highways agency marked up cars, on most of the old police parking viewpoints. But if I were to be stopped I'd tell them the truth: I've just bought a business, having been obliged to by a contract I signed before Coronavirus hit, and that I'm going to my office where we have a rota in place so the business can function with employees keeping appropriate distance, and keep the country's economy going.

From a legal point of view that's squarely within the examples of a reasonable excuse for travelling, though the law is badly drafted and I wouldn't even need to rely on it alone.

Yep, driving to work if you can’t work at home is not breaking any rules.

It’s not as though people can build stuff or have specialist equipment at home.

I’m wearing Hi Viz and helping to keep South Staffs water on.

Do you think wearing a cape will help ?

Good to know. WebEx is clunky though, but perhaps that's part of the torture?

Merc had indeed snapped a spring, £80 for a new one including fitting. Needs tracking doing now though.

Took boxster for a 5 mile spin to keep it from stopping working. Got gesticulated at by an older person as I drove along at the speed limit.
