Mito "fixed"

Crack
Image

Had to pull the bumper forward to get to the screws holding the grille on, they weren't shy with the fixings 😂
Image

2013-16 grille on the right

Taped the bumper to hold the crack closed and plastic welded the inside of the crack, plus a dab on the outside where it would be hidden.
Image

Grille in and only a couple of mm of a faint paint crack is visible

Despite the stats being slightly narrower, overall it looks a bit wider to to the way they and the blackness of the opening are reflected around.

yeah, but showing just the slightest glance is far sexier than openly just showing the whole thing....

À la Evostick, old Sierra was pressed into prom taxi duties tonight. Surprised at the interest in it by people born when it was already out of production a decade. Dropped off next to a new M4 and Bentley and it reminded me of the old EVO Capri/Zonda photo when came back to the car :)

Most likely to be the golf, should still do the job, they're not exactly a common sight on the road any more.

Caught the front wing on the merc on our gate a couple of weeks ago when manouvering cars to get the compact out for a potential buyer who never showed up.

Didn't hear or feel anything until it pinged off the end. Thankfully no bumper, bonnet or headlight damage.

Found a same year same colour one on the bay, has a few scuffs and chips but should tidy up ok. Unlikely to find one as good as the one on the car was before the incident, not many people break mint 40k mile cars.

Colour match looks very good to my eyes and saves having to blend new paint it. Still tempted to have a go at repairing the old one just as a practice / blending panel

The Spazda has its MoT in the morning...thoughts and prayers...
Just fill the new filter with diesel and you won’t have a problem. Once started give it 1500rpm or so for a few seconds and job jobbed.

Dave!
Thanks Dave, I'll see if I can summon up the courage to have a go at it.

Spazda MoT update from Friday, well what a cluster fuck. Long story short the car overheated on the way there, I was late, guy couldn't test it after all, a bit of the key broke which stopped me starting it. Later that day the van separately attempted to self immolate when the invertor shorted itself. I should have literally just stayed in bed.

Investigations show that the fan wasn't coming on due to a problem with the relay. The way the fan has been wired in isn't great, it looks like things have been getting hot for a while so I'm going to redo it and maybe fit a manually operated second fan as I have a few SPAL ones kicking about.

Updates/New Additions

Monaro
Is sold. With various issues on an engine rebuild, I'd fallen out of love with it. I dearly miss having a V8 in my garage, but I would want to start with a clean slate and try something different. Looking back through my photos, I don't have a single picture of it from the last 18 months or so, which says a lot.

Mini GP
It has now been retired from daily duties. In truth, the compromises that make it such a riot on a back road also made it a touch uncomfortable everyday. It's a hatchback, so is practical and the seats are supportive and comfy, but some days you just wanted to jump in a car with a more supple ride. Due to the EXTREME set up, it also has an appetite for damper rebuilds and drop links, so restricting the miles to 'fun miles only' seemed like a good idea. It got treated to a proper wash and it still looks as purposeful as ever (in my eyes).

I’ve added a new lower engine mount bush insert, to tighten up the driveline. There’s now no slack when setting off and changing gear. There’s a bit more vibration coming through the pedals/gear linkage, but as it’s now a weekend car it’s perfectly acceptable.

New addition - F56 Cooper S
This is MrsB's new car, which she got in December.

It's interesting comparing it to my Mini and both have positives and drawbacks compared to each other. Hers is a more-modern interior with a bigger infotainment display, sat nav etc. It also has switchable modes and switchable dampers (quite a rare option). Truth be told, the dampers in their sport setting are too firm for back roads. Surprisingly, there was quite a bit of induction noise and turbo whooshes (is that a term?) when stood outside the car. This has been further supplemented with a panel filter…
If anyone has driven an F56 Cooper S, they will know that the standard brakes are shocking. The pedal feels wooden and the overall power of them isn’t great. This feeling is exacerbated after jumping out of my car (six piston callipers up front and 330mm discs).
What can’t be argued is the sheer grunt of the newer 2.0 compared to my 1.6. It has bags more torque low down, although does feel a little restricted at the upper reaches of the rev range. In that sense, you tend to use the mid-range rather than extending it out to the limiter. The flexibility of the engine is one of the things that makes it a great all-rounder for daily use, when compared to my GP.
Handling-wise, it’s pretty good - obviously not as great as the GP, but it has a positive front end and a playful rear end. As mentioned above, when the dampers are in sport mode the ride is a little too firm. You can decouple the sport dampers from the sport mode in general.

Thankfully MrsB is a petrolhead, and after teasing her about how mine sounds fruitier than hers, she was adamant that she wanted a JCW exhaust. After winning one on eBay, we travelled to Middlesbrough to pick it up. The exhaust is one piece, so grabbed the keys to my dad’s BMW G30 530d and picked it up. It was a tight squeeze and couldn’t have really picked it up in a smaller car (certainly not a Mini!). It’s been on a few months and it sounds great – the pops and bangs are less natural than from mine, but are certainly louder. There’s a bit more parp on full throttle too.

Although a small car, you can fit quite a bit into it – circa 20-30 packs of tiles and all the necessary cement. I would say it’s cheaper than lowering springs, but that may not be true!

New addition – Land Rover Freelander 2
A purchase borne out of necessity. With the miles piling on the Mini, I decided I wanted a daily. I’m doing more and more miles for work, so this was a factor too. With a second dog and my first season as a beater at a local shoot, the choice was being narrowed down to a 4x4. It had to be one with genuine off road capability too, so that discounted quite a few options. I’d looked at several options, with the original Touareg being my favourite. The Suzuki Grand Vitara that I’d recommended in Jobbo’s thread was a close second and a more sensible approach. I got scared off my the stories of unreliability of the Touaregs – if it wasn’t going to be used as a daily I would’ve bought one. Man maths stepped in and I started looking at the later Touaregs (2010 onwards). These seem really good value and a nice place to be. The one I wanted was the 4.2tdi V8, but they are as rare as hen’s teeth. With an impending holiday and a Labrador that won’t stop growing, I had to find something ASAP.
I looked around a Volvo XC70 at a local Land Rover specialist. The car was immaculate and it ticked all the boxes. Again, there seems to be some reliability concerns with the auto gearboxes on these, so I passed on the car. The garage did mention they had a couple of Freelander 2s coming in. FL2s are cars I’d looked at, but for some reason had discounted. I can only think it’s because they are tainted with the unreliability of other LR products. However, further research suggested they are pretty robust cars.
I ended up buying one of the FL2s that had come in and I have to say, it fulfils the roles required of it. It managed the holiday with aplomb, the dogs love being in it (particularly Buster), it was comfortable on a recent trip down to Cardiff for work and I’m confident it’ll be all the off-roader I need. In respect of off-roading, I’m looking to get a second set of wheels to put some All Terrain tyres on. They’ll stay on the car for the shooting season/winter.

Long term plans will be to sell the Mini and get something Lotus-shaped. Or maybe a Cayman. Or Audi R8. Or Mustang. Or….
