I’m not sure if it’s because they sent the RACE kit, but the new rear shocks have proper bearings at the lower mount instead of rubber bushes. That’s a nice surprise.

Rear shocks are now on. Tonight - the fronts. Maybe.

The harnesses may not be as simple as i first thought. General consensus on the forums/groups are that the standard seats need modified to accept them or they just slip off. Hmm..

The Exige I get to drive occasionally has the full 2bular system on it. It sounds fucking ace, really makes the car into a mini supercar IMO. 8-)

Yep, you need proper seats or they're just dangerous.

I had one with the grommets cut into the original seats.

They worked OK, but honestly, the seats arent designed to take those loads and I wasn't completely happy about them. It's partly why I re-fitted the 3 point belt and took the harnesses out. Plus i was just using the blue one for commuting.

Have bought and fitted / used some of the Corbeaus and some of the Tillets, all work to varying degrees.

Think the grommets in the originals is what I'm going to do. I intend to leave the inertia reels for road use also.

I did a service on the van today as the light had come on a while back, it has some sort of oil quality sensor apparently. I was expecting it to be a bit of a struggle as the oil drain bolt and filter housing are hidden behind the transfer box and an extra chassis brace that rear wheel drive vans don't have, but it went ok in the end. On the upside it's so far off the ground I don't need to jack it up. The only slight drama was with the old sump bolt. It didn't come out very nicely, the thread looked pretty shagged and when I tried it showed little enthusiasm for going back in, so rather than just wanging it in I took a trip to the local Ford dealer who, in exchange for £3.36, gave me a new one that went straight in, thank fuck. I did not fancy having to try and run a tap in the hole to repair the thread. It took 7L of oil and was only just showing on the dipstick :shock: Later engines did get a bigger 9L sump which I suspect it what I have, despite the book saying 6.9L. Air filter was easy (and was pretty dirty), but I've chickened out on the fuel filter as you need to prime stuff and I've no idea what I'm doing with that (diesel noob), so I'll get an adult to do it for me.

The Spazda has its MoT in the morning...thoughts and prayers...

Just fill the new filter with diesel and you won’t have a problem. Once started give it 1500rpm or so for a few seconds and job jobbed.

I think I'd have to agree with Ste here. Cutting holes in seats doesn't sound like a good idea.

One of the grommets on the one I acquired had come apart so I had to bond it back together. You can see how the grommets are fitted to a part of the seat that is about 3mm thick GRP. It's essentially a headrest. The thicker stronger frame of the seat is easy to see below.

I'd guess that in a crash the harnesses would crush the seat and defrom it considerably. I'll fanny about with lots of stuff other than safety. If I'm driving something, especially on track, I want to know the seat and harnesses will do their job properly.

...and to remind you of the mindset of the person who'd fitted the grommets to that car... It had a Tillett B5 and proper harness on the drivers' side. The seat with harness grommets was on the passenger side when I got it. The driver's harness was fitted properly. The passenger harness had been fitted using hollow banjo bolts.

If the harness is at such an angle it could crush the seat, it's wrongly mounted in the first place. I was more concerned that the top of the seat could just snap off, failing its job as a head restraint, and leaving some nice sharp splinters to go into your neck.

Its still going to be better than the current solution of wearing the inertia reel belts on track. Although broken splintered seats isnt a desirable thought either.

What seemed like a decent cheap solution is becoming quite expensive :(

How is potentially fucking up your seats to bodge in harnesses better than wearing the seatbelt provided and tested with the car?!!
