Mk1 Golf GTi

Post by Nic »

In the spirit of the reversely named forum, I’m starting my build thread with where I currently am, rather than how I got here. I’ll fill in the details later on for those who don’t know.

Intercooler turned in double quick time (ordered yesterday at 10am) so thought we’d mock it up to see how the piping works.

Image

All looks ok, may need to modify the end of the charge pipe near the intercooler to allow a bend around a radiator but that’s nothing really, there’s minimal piping, all pipework is 2.5” so no reductions in flow and once the rad is back in place it’s a case of a bit of silicone piping and that’s another job ticked off.

Back in October the engine came out, the whole 16v conversion was sold for a decent amount.

Gave it a quick clean up

As luck would have it the money from selling my previous engine was burning a whole in my pocket and after a bit of luck (the chap selling was buying a gearbox off a friend) I ended up with a hybrid Ko3s turbo and tubular manifold along with S3 injectors, injector tail and MAF. This turned my previous Ko3s setup which would have produced 220bhp in to a setup capable of 300bhp.

Since then it’s been a case of waiting for bits to be done and buying parts.

I’d decided on a mk3 16v gearbox rather than a tdi gearbox as I felt the ratios would better suit a ko3 equipped car rather than a tdi gearbox which was much longer geared. Now that I’ve gone hybrid turbo this may have been the wrong choice but I’ve alresdy invested in to having a lsd fitted to my box so I’m stuck with it for now.

With a bit of research I managed to pick up a timing belt kit with a 16v tensioner and the required spacer for £56, compared to the timing belt kit usually required for a 20vT that is £120 and you end up binning half of it and still need a spacer and tensioner. Also bought a VR6 clutch as it fits and can handle the power, I’ve previosuly run a supercharged vr6 with 292bhp so I know a genuine Sachs is well up to the job.

I’ve also been researching baffled sumps and came across a kit on one of the fb groups, me rather stupidly thought I was buying plates ready to weld in, turns out that it was just a paper template that we had to cut out and weld in, in hindsight it was stupidly cheap for baffled sump plates but redicilously expensive for a sheet of paper. While the sump was off we stuck a new oil pump and pick up pipe in there.

Next up I wasn’t planning on doing this but it came up so cheap that I had to buy it, it’s a digidash2 which has already been in a mk1 with a 20vT, it was originally planned for next winter but well it was just too cheap to turn down and in luck that Scott was able to go round to the guys house and pick it up and post it to me.

Next up was engine in...

And then bolt up the drive train, and tbh even though I’d read it, researched it and was told it would be ok actually having a hybrid system of mk1 golf hubs, mk2 g60 brakes, late cabriolet driveshafts (thicker), mk3 16v gearbox, mk3 vr6 clutch and a mk4 engine all bolt up and roll about without anything fouling or catching is quite a relief.

This is the tubular jbs manifold fitted with the turbo, I bought a full stainless steel bolt set, simply because it’ll be nice to keep everything looking neat and tidy.

Still in the mocking up phase, I’m not trying to do a clean engine bay so have told them to route everything so that it’s functional but neat.  Once it’s all in place and running with no leaks etc it is coming back out for a good clean before being put back in for the final time.

The brake system that Flew built has handily worked out nicely here too, gives us plenty of clearance.

I don’t really run this car low as I prefer to drive the shit out of it without worrying if it will catch, with this in mind I wanted to check the sump clearance because the 20vT engine is a taller engine than my old kr. The mounts I’ve had made have raised it just enough so that it sits bang on perfect.

Image

And that brings this up to date mostly. I’ve bought a few parts for a raised shifter set up and a blanking plate to get rid of the secondary air intake system. I’m now waiting for my loom to come back with the stainless steel down pipe. I also need to go back and measure up my dash so that I can order a piece of carbon fibre to fit my digi dash in. I hope to have this running by the end of next week, but as with everythig like this time passes so quickly.

I was about to post asking for more updates, well timed! Looks like it'll be a cracking car. What are the interior plans?

The interior and exterior is complete, work was done by Dave around 7 years ago.

My knob turned up this morning.

It’s a bit smaller than I thought it would be.

Come on, hurry up!
The Evo forum really is a shadow of its former self. I remember when the internet was for the elite and now they seem to let any spastic on
