Top 5 grey German cars ranked
Re: Top 5 grey German cars ranked
Let's just say there is. And in my defence, the blue one had sold and I absolutely had to buy something that day.

This was probably the worst car I ever owned, but I sometimes miss it. I believe the official colour name was "GRANITSILBER METALLIC".

I wouldn’t really call your car grey, it’s more of an off white silver.
It’s the actual primer grey mostly VAG stuff that’s boring.
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: Top 5 grey German cars ranked
That's the best silver/grey on the thread.
Why was it such a bad car? I remember when I first saw one of those at the dealership and it was like something from the future and the past at the same time and looked absolutely incredible. I never got to drive one though.
Cheers,

I bought it for the reasons you mention - I was helping to produce a sci-fi film and we wanted a car for the hero that looked both dated and futuristic. I do love the looks (and the colour!), and the idea of a lazy V12. It was also very comfortable and relaxing for motorway driving. But it was completely unexciting to drive and shockingly unreliable.
I suspect if I had kept it, fixed all the faults and invested in a sports exhaust I might have grown to like it more, but some of the faults were beyond my patience; in particular, four separate auto electricians/BMW specialists were unable to trace a battery drain, so it always needed starting with a booster pack if I left it parked for more than a few days.
If you want to see it on one of the rare occasions it was working, the film is 'Narcopolis' and the 850i is featured extensively; I think it's still on Netflix.

Got it.
My Focus ST170 was a lovely metallic grey-blue but it just looked grey in the dark. On the paperwork it was down as blue however. I got pulled over by the fuzz one night for not having an MOT in date and the officer eyed me with suspicion saying "says it's blue here." I mumbled something about "it's metallic" whilst glancing nervously at his glock.

How fabulous though, will have to check out the film too.JonathanE wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 11:12 am I bought it for the reasons you mention - I was helping to produce a sci-fi film and we wanted a car for the hero that looked both dated and futuristic. Now you mention electrical gremlins, that rings a bell for some reason as to why they had a reputation for being troublesome.
Why was it so dull to drive? Just a big heavy lump dumped in a car and nothing tweaked around it to make it feel lively?

Mike.

What do you think of it btw? Apart from it being an absolute hooligan if you want it to be.

Re: Top 5 grey German cars ranked
I love it, I was a little concerned over winter that it wasn't that sharp handling and couldn't get its power down, but that's just the tyres, which are 100% summer tyres.
It's very quick when you want it to be but not as quick responding at normal driving revs as the e92 was, you kind of have to give it everything if was want it to go quickly, which is not really as I expected from the twin turbo set up but I suppose the e92 was still a big V8.
Difficult to describe, but I particularly like the way it seems to pivot around the centre of the car when cornering quick on the edge of traction, the pivot point on my e92 M3 definitely felt further forward with the rear swinging round more which was not as confidence inspiring. The handling is definitely the highlight for me.
It's averaged 26mpg which is decent enough (I do lots of dull commuting miles with the odd blast whenever road conditions allow) , and it can do 30+ on a run, but it's pretty low geared and over 70mph it does pretty crap mpg!

What tyres are you running in the winter months?Rich B wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 9:33 amI love it, I was a little concerned over winter that it wasn't that sharp handling and couldn't get its power down, but that's just the tyres, which are 100% summer tyres.

I've found that as I can pretty easily get the tyres scrabbling for grip in the dry, that I might want to put something with more grip on it from late Autumn.
I agree about the handling, it seems incredibly well balanced and a lot of fun the more I get used to the feel of it. Still getting the hang of 1st and reverse on the DSG box - seems very on/off at low speed and sometimes its like the clutch isn't engaging properly when I've just got in it and am pulling off the driveway.
Cheers,
Mike.

mines on supersports - Mik has suggested a decent all round alternative that I can't remember!Ascender wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 12:31 pmWhat tyres are you running in the winter months?Rich B wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 9:33 amI love it, I was a little concerned over winter that it wasn't that sharp handling and couldn't get its power down, but that's just the tyres, which are 100% summer tyres.

Mines a manual, so not much help with DSG quirks.

Goodyear Eagle F1 supersports were a great upgrade from MPSS on my M140i
Re: Top 5 grey German cars ranked
Thanks, I might try a set of those in the autumn. And possibly some winter wheels given the big fatty ones which are on the rear of this.
Cheers,
Mike.

M4 is on MPS4S after SS; much better traction overall, although I think the SS were slightly better new when it’s dry and over 10oC.. winter/cold, I just tend to loosen the traction control and let the tyres over-rotate..

The more I drive it, that's exactly the thing I'm finding. If you really want to go fast for an overtake, you have to absolutely nail the accelerator down and control any loss of traction. Its almost like turbo lag, but not.Rich B wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 9:33 am It's very quick when you want it to be but not as quick responding at normal driving revs as the e92 was, you kind of have to give it everything if was want it to go quickly, which is not really as I expected from the twin turbo set up but I suppose the e92 was still a big V8.
I've done some reading on the DCT box and the things I've found with it when crawling and reverse are to be expected. Which seems strange given my M5 Touring was the same and that was 18 year old tech at the time.
I really need to drive an M3/M4 now to see how that compares, particularly before I end up at the point of no return on the Touring.
Cheers,
Mike.
