Wheel choice

Post by Jobbo »

Having bought a set of winter wheels and tyres for my Allroad but ended up with only three, I'm now revisiting my choice of alloys. After having had the car for 3 months, I'm starting to think the 20" titanium finish diamond cut alloys on my car look a bit bling - more appropriate for a Black Edition S-Line than an Allroad. They were the most expensive optional wheels when new but I wouldn't have chosen them myself; I'd probably have gone for the 20" Allroad-specific wheels. They're these:

The winter wheels I've bought are the standard Allroad 18"s, which aren't exciting but suit the car and have a lovely 55 section sidewall so they give the best ride. My old Allroad had them on; the new one has full paint finish rather than grey bumpers and wheel arches though, so I'm not sure if they look a bit *too* small and plain. Here they are on an Allroad with full paint:

I have found a set of the Allroad-specific 20" alloys for sale in Nottinghamshire; twice the price of a set of the 18"s but perhaps it's worth it. Could certainly sell the existing alloys for more if that were a factor. While they look nice, I think the lure of the small wheels might be the winner:

I was thinking of getting all seasons for the 18"s and keeping them on all year. I'm not massively keen on buying two sets of wheels since they take up a lot of space and I already have 3 of the 18"s, so that's the way I'm swaying. Marv would no doubt approve (though is 18" small?). Anyone got any opinions on my taste?

Oh, as an added wild card, the Allroad seems to have been available in other countries on the same alloys as mine but in a silver finish which I think looks rather nice. Seems a shame to refurb the expensive titanium diamond cut finish though

I'd just go for the small wheels for the comfy ride and keep the big wheels for if/when you sell.

The 18s look alright for the kind of car it is.

My slight niggle is that it probably looked better with the grey bumpers and arches, and no tints, on the 18"s:

Get some matt grey wrap applied to the arches and you're golden

The choice has just been made for me - the fourth wheel has arrived back with the seller since I posted this thread. So they're sending that to me; obviously I shall pay them for the set, so I'm not splashing out on the 20"s. Well, maybe next week.

I like the 3rd pic down, shame they are not available in 18" for a best of both worlds. 18 is the biggest wheel I have ever had but I think my car has lower profile than an Allroad.

I agree with Gav. Third pic is the best of all of them.

And that’s why Audi can successfully charge £2000 or so for optional wheels.

I think silver wheels go better with the aluminium bash plates and sill trim than the titanium/diamond cut ones. There’s also the fact that the RS6 upgrade alloys were 21” versions of the one on my car so mine still look small at 20”.

Anyway, I’ll have the original alloys in pristine condition ti put back on it when I sell it then 😄

I like the first one most. The very thin spokes tell me that it’s likely forged too which is cool.
No 3 just looks like the accountants version of first which has resulted in a far chubbier wheel.
No 2 looks a bit too classic for that car.
How about not having a sig at all?

I am now a member of the small wheel appreciation society again. Really like how the silver wheels go with the dark blue paint, much more so than the titanium painted 20”s. But that’s pretty irrelevant compared to how it drives; crikey, 55 section sidewalls are lovely.

Hazelnut the cat appreciates them too.

I'm sure you'll have some tipex for the tyre lettering. Should get him back onboard 😁😁
