Racks

Post by mik »

Sometimes I forget how different we have it with steering racks now.

The Evora is 2.7 turns lock to lock and is magnesium-steering-wheel perfection. Pete’s 600LT was as close as I have experienced to its levels of feel despite assistance.

Mrs mik’s E-Tron is about 2.4 turns lock to lock. It’s has nothing like the feel of course, but in terms of ratio - who would have thought 10yrs ago that a 2.5tonne 4x4 would have such a quick rack?

Hot hatches were around 3.5turns lock to lock when I was a hot-Hatcher. I can remember driving a hired Orion very early in my driving career that had an unassisted rack at 5.4 turns lock to lock. Yes really. It was fucking ridiculous...

147GTA was only 1.7 lock to lock.....fairly common in Alfa's, the Giulia is only 2 turns as well.

Yeah, Alfa’s have had quick racks for a while, the mitos one makes it feel really pointy.

Takes some adjustment getting into the ‘sud which needs the most arm twirling for even modest bends

2 turns lock to lock on the M240i. Golf R was the same…until I ruined it by fitting a non OEM rack.

These are not the nice racks I was looking for.

^--- this.

Fabia is annoyingly quite a few turns lock to lock, which doesn't help navigating tight coned courses in it.
Left over crest; tightens.

The Orion I referred to above was borderline dangerous. It is probably 28years since I drove it, but I still recall counting thre number of turns lock to lock cos I couldn’t believe how low geared it was. 2.7 turns from centre to either full left or fill right lock.

It was light for a manual system. Which I assume was the whole point.... but roundabouts were farcical, and you’d need a week to gather up a lift-off-oversteer slide.

Maestros are 3.6 turns - awful, like you were turning a boat.

Much a like a decent rack, I do enjoy recirculating balls.
