The "anything & everything" about Porsche Boxsters thread

Post by Ascender »

The more I look at them, the more I want another one, probably an S... Looking at 10K max spend which gets a 2003-2005 S with about 60K miles.

What are the potential pitfalls in buying something like this one assuming its got a FSH?

Are Boxsters like 911s, whereby the higher mileage ones should have either had any potential engine/seal catastrophes fixed by now?

What are the must-have options?

From my vast experience of driving Jobbo's old one and an "impromptu side by side performance analysis" with my old e46 330i, I wouldn't bother with anything other than an "S". Jobbo's was nice but wasn't "special" enough. It wasn't until you were well into 3rd gear that it showed the bimmer a clean pair of heels.

Jobbo Didn't yours have a fantastic history, high miles and no air con?

Are you after a 987 or 986 Mike? If 987 then 3.2 or 3.4? Probably the wrong time of year to get a bargain - mine was 11k, 2007, 45k miles in Winter. The ims issue isnt one with a 3.4 boxster as they changed the part from 2006 by the way.

Have to say though it's absolutely brilliant - my 'not leasing a golf' fund which is there for Porsche running / repairs is upto + 1200 quid in 6 months and over 5k miles.

Prefer it to my M coupe.

Its 986s with the 3.2 litre engine which I’ve done an initial search-on as there’s a good selection under 10K. That 2004 one in Dundee for example has a FSH and reasonable mileage in a nice colour, recent service, MOT etc.

OK, so the 987 was the “new” one, there’s a couple at about 11K...

Foz Would the risk of those “things” (other than it not being a 911 and therefore being a Hairdresser’s car) put you off getting one at that sort of price?

So this one looks interesting, higher mileage but has had new clutch in 2018.

For £10k I’d want a 987. The 986 just looks like a £4-5k car to me.

As much as I love my 996, I agree with Rich here.

Yeah you’re all right... I’d lost track of the model numbers but you’re right, 987 it is.

So.... What’s the must-haves from a spec point of view?

I'd have the 986 for £5k and save the change for the engine rebuild ;)

I think the BOSE in mine is pretty great so I would not want one without it.

How about this one?
Came in part exchange and priced to clear. Please note this is strictly a trade sale. You are welcome to drive the car before you buy. In good overall condition. Engine does have a ticking noise but the car does start and drive fine.

That means It’s fucked and we know if we sell it you, you will be back immediately..

Can a trader even do that by law?

Bore scoring issues. Even ones rebuilt somewhere reputable and on 50k miles can go again, a friend bought a rebuilt one and sold it after a year because it had failed a second time.

If it’s a trade sale you’re fucked on any comeback.

I was surprised to read that description, I’m sure they can’t legally do that but I’m sure someone will buy the car regardless!

Have found a nice one but the owner has managed to lose the service book...
Cheers,

Mike.
