I’m totally sold on the 987, but....

Have seen these two today. Under 10K, both had clutches and IMS. FSH. Am I mad to consider a 986 S?

Dark blue, 60K, IMS, clutch, water pump... Bose, heated seats, hardtop, extended leather... £9,250.

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifie ... 2qh&page=1

New clutch, IMS, sports exhaust, heated seats.... 47K... £8,000.

Cheers,

Mike.

Adaptive dampers would be good - can't remember whether these are standard on the S - I think perhaps that's only the 997. Sports seats and sports steering wheel also nice options but you could live without. Sport Chrono and the 'sport' throttle response largely pointless. 19" Carrera wheels as per Broccers Sport model make a huge difference to the looks.
The adaptive dampers weren’t standard fit but could be specced - there was a race pack I think that had this and the sport chrono. I’m not sure if buying such a car means it’s highly likely to have been thrashed though.

The cabin and level of fit is much better and it’s dynamically sharper. Everyone’s different but I find it plenty powerful and enjoy spinning up the rears off a roundabout from time to time.

The things to look out for are the IMS (06 onwards cars tend to be ok as they have the updated bearing) and bore scoring (the 3.4s are supposedly at greater risk... I think Broccers got his scoped pre purchase but I didn’t and touch wood haven’t had problems.

I got mine from an independent Porsche dealer with a good reputation (the excellent Northway), mostly because I felt it gave me a bit of peace of mind in case there were teething troubles. I had an issue with water ingress early on which they sorted for me without any fuss.
Thanks, so another vote for a 987!

Mike.

You’re not, my advice would be to drive both and see which you like. The 986 had a much more old school Porsche cockpit with the sides coming in steeply toward the roofline which I found claustrophobic.

I like the blue one; service history from well-respected specialists too.

But yes, all things being equal I prefer 987 3.2 but that’s just cos of its look.

My Boxster was an original 2.5, so I’m used to that cockpit and design and had always hankered after an S but I think I went for an M Coupe instead.

Yes, the 987 is much more modern. But I’m now wondering if I went for something like the blue one for 12-18 months, then went to a 987 am I going to be losing a load of money? Probably not?

If you were going to sell privately... selling a Porsche means you're going to deal with a lot of twats. I'd just get the one you want in the first place 😂

And I guess that makes me one of those twats as things stand 😃

Have emailed the guy to see if the blue one is still available. I suspect it won’t be, but you never know.

986 interests me more

Pretty sure 987 were accused of aloof steering at launch due to wider profile tyres

Its funny I was looking at cheap Boxsters originally then the budget crept. The adaptive suspension on mine which comes on when you press sport are well erm a bit firm for the road imo. The sport button however does actually make it into a different car, I think its tied into the sports chrono. That was another option I would have as it looks good

Another point to note is the more expensive tax if after 2005 car. I would go and try a 987 before buying a 986 :)

re the handling mine came with 5mm spacers and the suspension is 10mm lower as standard so probably makes a difference. I didnt test drive any cars and just bought this without seeing it.

They really are a fantastic package.

Purchase thread
Looks nice! Will go read the thread properly now.

@240PP What’s the spec, likely price etc if you don’t mind me asking? Just trying to get a feel for the market at the moment.
Not sure on full spec but it has sports chrono, sport button, PSM, PASM, Bose. Currently on 61k.

I haven't had chance to have a proper look at prices yet but I paid £13k in May last year. I actually spoke to the previous owner a few weeks back as I wanted some info on what oil he used. I asked him how he was getting on with his 981 GTS and he's already chopped it in for a 991.2 8-)

The car is in Swindon (you're in Scotland IIRC) but you're welcome to come and have a drive.

2/3 months ago I missed out on a 2004 986 3.2 S Anniversary Edition, 110k, Full history and mint for £4400 (which was then sold within the week for 8k)

To me 4k seems fair for old cars, I couldn't spend 10k on something 1/2 years newer

Its that creeping budget thing which is so easy to just add a couple of grand... then another couple... then before you know it...

You won't feel short changed with a 986 but the Blue one is big money, too close to the newer cars for my money.

Yeah, its just under the top end of the budget, but its got a decent mileage, the spec is spot on (mechanically seems to have had everything done) and as a bonus it has a hardtop. The 987s I’ve seen for similar money are a few grand of a step-up or double the mileage. Its probably not a great time to be buying given its (supposed to be) summer.

Even compared to similarly priced 986s the mileage is low. Although I suspect its one of those things where if I sit on the search each day, something special/bargain-tastic might pop up.

Only challenge now may be getting to Stoke on Trent... No idea where that is other than “south”.

Mike.

It's because you're a man of class 8-)

Would love to try an R172. They're not much of a looker, but the idea of the same setup with a much better gearbox, another 50hp+ plus optional LSD sounds like a right hoot.

Seems to be quite a few 987s on eBay for some reason although most seem to be well south of the border....

If you’re coming to Swindon, you may as well come by Oxford and try mine!
