The reviews seem pretty solid. Have you owned one?

I loved the loping nature of my A8 when I was doing motorway commuting every day. As long as you don't expect to be saving money by doing it, and are just doing it for a more relaxing time, then it sounds a good plan.

Saying that I commuted 300 mile each way weekly round trips in my 306 Rallye for 11 months. I was a bit younger then though.

My old E46 320td was a good car, basic spec but I did about 40k miles in it and never found it uncomfortable or tiring. I only sold it because I'd been promising myself something more flashy for a couple of years yet the Compact just kept going and going, so when it reached 200k miles I made a snap decision and bought the 5-Series. I've just checked and apart from an advisory for worn tyres it got another clean MOT last November @ 215k miles.

That XK is lovely 8-)

If you’re going for an XF then as has already been said the 3.0D or 5.0 V8 are the engines to get, the 2.2(?) and 2.7 are to be avoided. Facelift cars are better again if you can find one, they have a number of revisions, tweaks and improvements. I’ve never owned one but I’ve driven quite a few and they’re a great car.

Alternative Jag would be an X350 generation XJ, a few years back a friend picked up a 3.0D with 70k miles on it for £7k-ish off an old guy who was giving up driving. The car was immaculate having lived in a garage all its life.

Unless you need the space, I'd keep using the Boxster as a daily especially we're into summer now, and buy a cruiser later in autumn.

If you go Volvo, R-design seats are significantly better than standard.

I think I'm probably going to do this - some surveys of Autotrader and Pistonheads suggest there are plenty of reasonably priced ones in good nick going around so I don't need to jump on a bargain.

An S60 is certainly within the realms of possibility, there are some nice looking ones in budget.

I should get a Harry M phone app and check the decibels. You get a combination of engine blare (70mph in 6th is 3000rpm), tyre noise and wind buffeting the cloth roof.

It's fine but it just gets wearing after a while.
Look out for a hardtop for in the week and revert to soft top at the weekend?

Does it make a huge difference to road noise? I imagine a lot of that is engine blare etc.

Mate in Belgium had an XF 2.7 diesel when we lived over there. It sounded ok ‘for a diesel’ but yeah, in the first year or so he had no end of issues with it. TPM shitting itself regularly but it was the new diff it needed after a few months which really pissed him off. After the first year though, it was a lot better IIRC. Didn’t put him off as he then bought an F-Pace to replace it.

Yes, plus piles, ear problems and I think have been purchasing those little leather pouches for their phones.

XJ’s are much nicer...

If going for an OVLOV with a Boxster surely the only sensible option is an XC version of the line up? What’s cooler and less grandad than a Volvo estate? An AWD one!
