Had a couple of C4 Cacti as hire cars. Rather liked them, particular the turbo petrol. Shame about the nasty “weight saving” (penny pinching) stuff like no split/fold rear seats and pop out rear windows.

There’s someone importing 80s/90s Nissan Sunny pick-ups on eBay that I keep seeing. Absolutely no need for one, they’re probably terrible but they look lovely.

there is something cool about this era of Volvo. I see a really nice 240 wagon every time I do the school run. It's lovely!

I had a 440 - it was nice but not as classic as the 300's

I used to really want a 440 Turbo.

My best friend at college used to tool about in his Mum's one. It was pretty quick IIRC. Wasn't the 1.7 a Renault engine?

Jesus Jimmy, I know you’ve 2 divorces under your belt but there’s no need to completely give up on life.
I've not quite given up yet. I'm back in a Saab so my career as an architect seems to be under way again. Although, it's a 20 year old 9-3 Aero so I'm obviously not a successful architect.

I seem to remember that the claimed 0-60 wasn't all that quick but it had loads of midrange. Yeah, it was the 1.7 Renault mit Turbo. I think people used to strip the engines to stick in R5GTTs?

Your knowledge is greater than mine. Yes, the midrange was very good. Very 'boosty' and a lot of fun for a pair of 18 year olds like us.

Mother used to have a 345....DL, I want to say?

Fucking awful car. Although it did write off a Lada at one point so not all bad I suppose.

I had a 340 at Uni that I bought for £50 off a friend. It was a fecking liability. Some drunken student crashed into it and wrote it off as I was celebrating my last piece of coursework or something. Then it (ok, I...) caused a load of family stress when the propshaft went, I took it to a dodgy back street garage who took some money, failed to fix it, said it was tricky and wanted more money, until we got it back off them eventually.
Left over crest; tightens.

Oh, when buying the Volvo, me dad was told that the prop was broken. He bought it based on that at a proper knock down price, turned up with a propshaft, fitted it outside the guys house on the road, and drove it away.

Cheeky bastard!

A mate of mine had a 340 with the DAF CVT gearbox (Variomatic?). It could go as fast backwards as it could forwards. He once fell out with his girlfriend and in his anger, floored it in reverse. At about 45mph he lost it and did a sort of half j-turn through someone’s garden wall.

I bought my weird crushes.

MG Maestro and Volvo 480 Turbo.

Both were pretty OK, Maestro drove well and was fairly quick for the time, ate headgaskets though and needed 3 in it's time with me. I'd have another if I had space as I still have a soft spot for them.
Volvo wasn't fast initially but was made fast with a £3 bleed valve and doubling boost to a whole 12psi (and din't miss a beat in 20k)! A set of Eilbach springs improved handling markedly, electrically it wasn't wonderful though, Alternator went, dash computer was intermittent (wonderful when it's your fuel gauge and engine temp gauge) and boot light started acting up and coming on randomly.

Haven't craved anything odd since.

Is there any other mainstream car with a transaxle?

Traded a 360GLE with 30,000 miles on it for £1 when I worked at Volvo c.2004 and gave it to my cousin. 20 years of central London had left it with a tired clutch and worn carb that only functioned correctly at idle or full throttle, but it was a surprisingly enjoyable drive.

480s had the great car feature dead end of heated door locks! If we traded a clean turbo in I’d often take it for a little drive, but there are better cars out there to waste your time on!

I had one, as long as you didn't expect it to be a sports car it was actually pretty decent. Comfy, big boot, and based on reliable Cavalier underpinnings. And they really were pretty stylish at the time.
And that’s the problem, I wanted it to be a RWD sports car. I didn’t realise they did a 200bhp 4wd version until recently, that will be the one to have.

IIRC I read one summary that advised they would understeer and oversteer in the same corner.
