Toyota GR Yaris

Post by mikeyb »

Details here:

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new- ... rbo-engine

260bhp and 4wd in a hardcore small hot hatch is an interesting proposition. The option of torsen diffs on both axles is intriguing. No mention of official pricing in the UK (I think prices mentioned so far are an indiciation based on price in Japan). I was looking forward to the reviews of the new Mini GP, but this may be a better package :geek:

That rear biased diff setting (in the preview drive, said to be Normal (60:40 front to rear), Sport (30:70) and Track (50:50) ) is interesting.

1280kg ain't a bad kerb weight either for a 4WD small hatch these days either.

Could be very interesting.

It's got future classic written all over it 😎

It's amazing how one if the dullest manufacturers in the World go out on a limb and develop something like that.

Will anyone buy it aside from a handful of car guys?

At least it’s priced well.

No, it's just an optical illusion, and definitely not related to the fact it's being homologated for the next WRC season, absolutely not.

It looks identical. Can’t believe they stuck the same bodykit on the road car as the WRC car

I think it's a whole new floorpan, lower roof etc, so could well be widened arches. Wider track too. From some angles it looks odd, but overall I like it.

Looks suitably bonkers. The FWD GRMN version is already fairly mad, for a Yaris - 200+bhp, supercharged, LSD.
Left over crest; tightens.

Sorry Bean, no idea what you’re trying to say. It was a basic question I thought?

The whole bodyshell is new (three door, they only sell 5 door cooking models) with some bits from some modular floorpans (corolla rear end), widened track, etc.

I was gonna say "it's in the article" but it's actually in the 'first drive' linked within the article
It looks like a regular Yaris that has spent several months gulping down protein shakes. It shares a few things in common with the forthcoming new Yaris: it’s built on the same basic platform and has the same wheelbase. But the upper body is all new and the differences are easy to spot: it has three doors whereas the standard Yaris is five-door only, the roof is substantially lower at the rear louvre and the rear features a notably wider track, with big, beefy wheel arches.

Those changes are to aid the design of the next Yaris WRC, due to rules that bodywork must closely follow that of a production car. The rally team gave Saito “many difficult requests”, principally regarding the car’s aerodynamics, weight and strength. Saito then had to battle to gain approval for those changes – and it wasn’t easy, given that Toyota is still essentially a high-volume producer of mass-market cars. “When we asked for three doors, everyone disagreed, because it meant a new body,” he says. “We had to fight for it, but we finally got it.”
it does seem like GR are pushing for it to be a serious weapon - you don't get a whole new bodyshell if you're just sticking some wings on it, a fat engine under the bonnet and calling it 'good enough'.

I like the sound of this thing. Hopefully other manufacturers will follow suit. It could be like the 80's & 90's again

Suzuki have been showing off a pumped up swift too.

I said when I saw it a couple of days ago it would be cool if it was a 2.0 turbo and 4wd. No idea if it is on not, most likely not, but quite nice to see some more sporty orientated concepts instead of making everything evo / green constantly.

Luckily.

Not bad value when the ST205 retailed at £32k in 1994.
