Your fleet running reports
Re: Your fleet running reports
SundayJumper - you probably get good quotes as you send them a picture of your driveway . You have leverage due to the amount
Well the drop off went fine, the ML tows nice with the extra power and cruise control, electrics all sorting themselves out so no fog lights on the car etc. I still think the Defender was slightly more stable though as it was like a rock.
The problem came when coming home and particularly where the M42 and M5 cross by Bromsgrove. Now it averaged 19mpg which isn’t terrible and I don’t want to fill up on the motorway so I check my range and it says 86 miles. Roughly 20 minutes later I check again and it’s at 64. A huge lorry was throwing up tons of spray as it was hammering down so I accelerate up to 75 to get past and then knock it back into cruise again. It’s like I’ve switched the engine off. No power, no stuttering nothing.
So I hit the hazards and move over across the M5 and M42 where they merge and manage to get on the hard shoulder before I’m going too slowly.
It wouldn’t start at all, spinning up fine but not a twitch from the engine. I check the battery connections, let it cool incase it’s a crank sensor getting hot and dying, disconnect the MAF ( (c) Beany ) and then look at the relays and fuses. Nothing un-toward so call the RAC.
The RAC man comes out, checks for fuel pressure, substitutes the fuel pump relay for a spare, plugs in his widget to check the crank signal and notices the fuel level is showing 0 on his meter. He cycles the ignition a few times, I’ve already done this about 20 times trying to get it to start, when the fuel gauge needle drops to zero and the low fuel light comes on
I then work out my range from roughly what I had in the tank when I started and my average mpg and I should have run out 10 miles earlier, fucking clever fuel gauges. My mileage has a historical readout since the last main reset, a trip readout which resets when the engine cools down between starts. So I go by the gauge. I think I’ll be resetting the main trip from now on till I figure out what is happening
The annoying part is though, roughly 6 years ago on that exact stretch of road I was driving my 500e when my low fuel light hadn’t come on and my gauge was stuck at 1/4 of a tank as it hadn’t been used and had stuck. I broke down about 1 mike further up that exact section of road, driving another Mercedes V8 coming back from the exact same place
When I pick the car up I think I’ll go a different route home.
On the way back stopping for a bit of food we saw this, would have been quite cool to have seen it on the way up and park next to it.
In conclusion, some twat ran out of fuel in the same spot coming from the same location in the same kind of cars twice in 6 years.
Dave!

Yeah that sounds annoying
I’ve run out of fuel 100m before the fuel station I was heading to, and jammily rolled onto the forecourt at walking pace.
Only time I did a proper job was in my first car - mk2 escort - ran out on the M8 and had to call rescue services. In my defence - lack of a working fuel gauge was just one of the things wrong with that car that we only noticed after getting it home. My solution was a 5l can in the boot, but on this day my mum was picking up a new car and trading in the old one - was touch&go on fuel so I told her to take my can rather than putting petrol in.
Rescue Arrived with a flat-bed (as was the norm back then) and took me to a petrol station. Recovery bloke had given me a bit of a ribbing for my predicament. I was sticking a tenner In the car and got to just over £8 before I remembered that I didn’t have my wallet. Checked pocket. £3.
Ran over to the ready-to-depart recovery bloke like I was his own stoopid teenager and spluttered out my story. After staring incredulously at me for about 8hrs (that’s how long it felt) he laughed and pulled a fiver out his his pocket. Absolute star. I was still about 8p short but the petrol station were also kind that day.
I fell soooo stoopid.

Re: Your fleet running reports
IIRC they have 6 months once they've sent you the NIP to either prosecute or offer a course etc.
Admiral automatically sent my wife back £20 earlier this year due to C19 causing people to drive less. Direct Line for comparison didn't, and had the cheek to hike my renewal 20% in Summer.

Re: Your fleet running reports
We rang them am couple of weeks ago and got 5% of premium back on each car for lack of use (£10 each approx). Policies were still current though.
Left over crest; tightens.
Re: Your fleet running reports
£10 how generous of them
You have just reminded me about admiral sending £20 back, maybe that’s the reason for the price hike. A small good deed does not overcome a shafting when considering customer loyalty.
I forgot that my other cars are with LV so their multi car discount has made them significantly cheaper so I’m just going to use them. LV seem to be good eggs, they believed me when I said my Defender is a private use vehicle despite having commercial road tax which automatically increases premiums by £1000 when I went to add the number plate?! It’s odd, many Defenders I see have £500 road tax but mine is half that due to being commercial yet I don’t have box sides.

Re: Your fleet running reports
We were happy with Admiral until renewal time (their new quote wasn't good enough. Would have accepted if they'd offered similar to last year, but a hike of 30ish percent was more than I was willing to pay). As mentioned previously we got the £20 back too, and they dropped the excess for the damage done in March, saving us about £700.Simon wrote: ↑Sun Oct 25, 2020 10:11 amIIRC they have 6 months once they've sent you the NIP to either prosecute or offer a course etc.

Re: Your fleet running reports
You must be a liability
I phoned Direct Line on Friday regarding my renewal and they offered a 10% refund on last year's premium for lack of mileage (£33) and then beat the best quote I could get on a comparison site by £10.

BTW Darkside Developments are doing a V10 Toerag proper 4x4 which seems to consist of them taking lots of bits off the car. If you're after some stuff they might be selling spare bits.

Least likely car I’ve seen at a Solo. Although spot-on for Brooklands.

A Frazer Nash Super Sports apparently. And he wasn't hanging about, he was 36/45 overall at the end of the day !Sundayjumper wrote: ↑Sun Oct 25, 2020 11:46 am Least likely car I’ve seen at a Solo. Although spot-on for Brooklands.

Yes I think that's right - what a joke. They should have the 30 days you have to respond to the request for confirmation of the drivers details. If they're too ineffcient to manage that then tough shit. Why should they have a lower standard of response than they expect of you?Simon wrote: ↑Sun Oct 25, 2020 10:11 amIIRC they have 6 months once they've sent you the NIP to either prosecute or offer a course etc.

Re: Your fleet running reports
When I first read that I thought you were commenting on the quality of the block paving
Back to Admiral - I was with them for years as they were always the best price. My Dad & brother too. All three of us (on separate occasions I hasten to add...) had reasons to claim for write-offs and we all got good service.
However I fell out with them when a &%@% pulled out in front of me on a roundabout. There was barely a scrape but they claimed personal injury - utter b!@£$%&s - and Admiral bent over backwards to pay them off. I sent photos of the minimal damage and told them how it was obviously a totally opportunistic claim but they wouldn't do anything. I thought the industry was meant to be clamping down on dodgy claims ??
Anyway, they lost a customer that was insuring six cars with them at the time. <shrug>. Maybe they used to be good but have gone downhill.
Now, I've not needed to claim yet, which is obviously the acid test, but Reis have been lovely so far. On the competition cover for the Compact they just asked for a list of the mods and said "yeah'. I got the feeling they were disappointed it wasn't *more* modified. Cover for the other cars is well priced and I know I can always email them directly and get a reply from a real person. Thumbs up

Re: Your fleet running reports
Galaxy now has a new O/S wing and some touch-up paint on the O/S rear bumper where it was kissed by a French car a couple of years ago.
Fresh paint really highlights how tired the rest of it is. Still need to replace the N/S mirror.

I insured the Civic with Reis and have so far had a similarly good experience - they didn't seem to GAF that it had a different engine in it. When the time comes to insure the MX-5 I'll definitely be giving them a call.Sundayjumper wrote: ↑Sun Oct 25, 2020 10:51 pm

Re: Your fleet running reports
The Civic has been getting some love recently, I broke the OEM rev counter whilst trying to fix it (it was reading about half the revs it should do) so replaced it with a Stack one, and also added a cheap-ish Prosport all-in-one gauge showing oil temp, water temp and oil pressure. It was tempting to angle the rev counter so the 8k redline was at 12 o'clock (as seen in 911's) but decided against. I rounded this out with a quick release for the steering wheel so it all looks very trackday now It also got its first wash since I bought it in March.
The remains of an old car alarm was removed too, and to my suprise the car still ran afterwards and nothing caught fire.
I still want to add a turbo to it, but got punted from work recently so that will have to wait.
The Spazda is pretty much finished now, the cooling system is back together and seems to work ok, here were a few leaks due to clamps not being tight enough, and one of the fancy Mikalor ones was leaking like a bastard so was changed for a Juilee clip.
So I gave it an oil change to celebrate. It's not insured at the moment so it's sitting in the garden under a cover for now.
As for the M135i it has sat on the drive at my mums house on a SORN pretty much since the original lockdown. Part of me thinks I should sell it, but I really like it and don't need the money, so it can stay for now.
