Laser Engraver

Post by Sundayjumper »

On (another) whim I ordered a laser engraver thingamajog recently. Like this:

It's brill ! It has a 7000mW laser which is not even nearly enough to cut metal, but does paper & cardboard no problem, and will do ~1mm into wood. You can do multiple passes if you need to work through something thicker. I've been messing with some offcuts from a wooden venetian blind ~2mm thick and it works well.

If anyone had told me a couple of years ago that one day I'd be using a laser to etch a unicorn onto a tangerine I may have been sceptical. Life is amazwballs x10000000.

Just under £150. I know it's not trivial money but I'm pretty blown away with what you can do with it.

OK, so apart from not realising the logo won't cut nicely, it worked OK. I think that's the forum Christmas pressies sorted !

They're great. My mate bought one a while back, it's fun to see what materials you can cut into/through....they're pretty powerful!

That's brilliant.

I can't think of a single practical use for it, but it's still brilliant.

That is bloody brilliant

I have done everything in my power to resist buying a 3D printer and 3D scanner as I have a history of going way over the top in home tech projects like this (when it was launched: Canon 1Ds and 4 L lenses come to mind ...)

But now I must have a laser etcher/cutter, 3D printer and 3D scanner

I only have so much will power dammit
