X79 + i7-3930K upgrade
This Chilblast PC was the dog's danglies when I bought it 6-7 years ago, and it's been upgraded over the years but still has a Sabertooth X79 mobo and i7-3930K cpu in it, which is now the bottleneck.
I'm right in thinking, that replacing the mobo and cpu with something current and i9 flavoured is going to be a complete re-install of Windows 10, aren't I? The thought of that alone is putting me off. I can't afford the downtime of 2 days spent re-installing a fvck-ton of stuff for starters.
Is there "a way"?

Re: X79 + i7-3930K upgrade
Windows 10 pretty much 'just works'
I put the hard drive taken out of my i5 6600k ( which I had cloned to an ssd ) and stick it in a spare parts pc based on a Core2duo cpu and motherboard. Start up took about 10 mins while it found all the drivers and after that I just logged into windows as normal.
Windows activation will most likely go a bit spazzy as it will think you're trying to run a new copy on a different machine. If it was a retail version you might be able to go through the troubleshooter and ' I've made significant hardware changes' route. However I've had limited success with that and now just use £3 instant delivery windows keys off eBay and never had an issue with them.

Yeah it'll be fine. As mentioned, it might just want re-activating but Win10 is generally OK with hardware changes.
Edit - also looking at upgrading my old 2500k, which has been a trusty workhorse for the last 7 years. Looking at the i7 9700k myself...this PC hardware lark seems more expensive than ever though

Interesting chaps thanks. I found a couple of TomsHardware threads where people were saying it absolutely will not work like that.
Hmm. What to do.
Then I found this: https://shadow.tech/gben/ and I'm wondering whether this isn't a better route, especially for when I capitulate and buy my lad a PC for his room.

Re: X79 + i7-3930K upgrade
I saw the cloud-based PC lark (especially those listed) but £330/year equates to a lot of PC upgrades. I mean, if you spend £1000 every 3 years you'll have a pretty decent setup.
Then you have to take into account input latency if you play FPS games, and you'll STILL need a PC at your end to get access (or buy into their little desktop box). I guess it's good if you're frequently mobile, but otherwise, I'd just buy my own desktop.

Yep that seems like a terrible idea, the reviews for it aren’t very confidence inspiring either.
I tried the PSNow free trial which is essentially the same thing - it was good for 98% of the time then would lag/stutter which eventually got tedious.

How about not having a sig at all?
Re: X79 + i7-3930K upgrade
I took a fully working WIN10 ssd out of a old Dell laptop that I was using as a media center and put it in a newer HP ultra small form factor that I wanted to use as the new media center.
It thought about it for 5 mins and then just worked. I was very surprised.
The Evo forum really is a shadow of its former self. I remember when the internet was for the elite and now they seem to let any spastic on

Some evonomics happened.
PROCESSOR: Intel Core i9-9900K CPU, 8 Cores / 16 Threads, 3.6 - 5.0GHz
Power Supply: Corsair RM1000x 80 PLUS Gold 1000W PSU
CASE: Riotoro CR480 Gaming Case - Black
MOTHERBOARD: Asus ROG MAXIMUS XI HERO (WI-FI) Z390 Motherboard
COOLER: Corsair Hydro H115i PRO RGB CPU Cooler
Thermal Paste: Prolimatech PK-3 Nano Particle Thermal Paste
Memory: 32GB DDR4 2400MHz Memory (2 x 16GB Sticks)
Case Cooling: Quiet Cooling Fans Upgrade Pack
M.2 PCIe SSD: 1TB Samsung 970 EVO M.2 PCIe Solid State Drive
Optical Drive: 24x DVD-RW Drive
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX Sound Card
Ordered this custom PC from Chillblast (where I got my current machine from back in 2012). I'll take the GTX1080Ti and SSDs out of this one and put it in the new one, put the old graphics card back and a spare HDD in this one, and give it to my boy for his room.
Should see me right for at least another 6.

Re: X79 + i7-3930K upgrade
Noice! I had to burn a DVD the other day for the first time in about 4 years
Re: X79 + i7-3930K upgrade
Ha, yeah I did think twice about bothering with a DVD drive, but then I thought for 5p or however much they are now, there will no doubt be one occasion I need it.
Re: X79 + i7-3930K upgrade
Nice! Go big or go home
Not sure if bother with a sound card these days, unless you're planning on doimg funky audio stuff or playing high-quality audio through decent speakers?

Re: X79 + i7-3930K upgrade
It was peanuts. I was spending £1900... why not!
Re: X79 + i7-3930K upgrade
That power supply is a bit overkill isn’t it? I specced mine for a 2080ti (in a few years) and the builder said 650 is plenty.

Re: X79 + i7-3930K upgrade
Like traditional scope creep, it probably didn't add much to the overall cost to bump it up to that from a 650 / 700w one.
Cheers, Harry
Re: X79 + i7-3930K upgrade
Excellent work! Pretty much exactly like every upgrade on mine has gone (and why I daren't entertain even thinking about looking at upgrade kits any time soon )
