Lag on laptop.

Post by Zonda_ »

My laptop has started taking an age to do things, e.g. click a drop down menu and it might open 5 seconds later. I've run malware and virus scans but noting shows. It's not ancient at 5 years old, it's a Core i5 with an SSD. Any suggestions? Processor failing?

Control Alt Delete, Task Manager and see what's using up all the CPU and / or memory.

The CPU might be throttling right back to manage heat. Does the task manager show the CPU running at the correct speed?

It says the base speed is 2.30Ghz and it's running around 2.17Ghz

Not meaning to be condescending (which means I talk "down" to people) but you are sorting on CPU or memory usage, rather than listing by task alphabetically?

OK mate, had to ask. It's impossible to know what the asker is basing their question on without asking the basics.

Haven't got a clue then; you'll need a real IT'er to help!

It's changed now, from taking an age to open drop down boxes they now appear for a split second then vanish! Think it's fooked!

Try Ctrl+Shift+Windows+B - it'll reset the video card. Might be your driver is old/fucked.

I know it's not the problem in this case, but I've lost count of how many people's computers I've 'fixed' over the years by popping the side off and blowing vast amounts of dust out of the cpu cooler

Indeed, I'd never heard of it. Interestingly it kept reverting back to the problem after a few minutes, a driver check said it was the current driver and no updates were available but further digging found a newer version that has sorted it.
