I vaguely recall an article on The Onion some years ago about inclusive minutes - some company offering 50,000 minutes of call time per month and then another offering 60,000 to trump them...

No WiFi on the train? About 2/3rds of our rolling stock now have pretty good connection. I don't tend to watch YouTube or other streaming video on the move. On the train at most I'll be streaming Spotify. Occasionally do the same in the car while also running Waze. That's probably my biggest data usage. Or tethered to the laptop as a hotspot for eg a Webex / SFB.

Yes, it's rubbish - slow and loses connection more than my phone does, but even worse: CrossCountry make you pay for it on some of their trains!

So my new iPhone XS was delivered yesterday afternoon...

And like seemingly everything in my life at the moment, it has not been straight forward. Finished up work at 11:30 last night and opened it up - all seemed to go well setting it up, faceID etc. but then the time came to plug it in to restore from an iTunes back up and iTunes wouldn't recognise it.

Spent till 1am in the morning installing a newer operating system and iTunes updates on my Mac and went to bed as it was showing 45mins+ to update OSX.

Tried again this morning but still no luck. There are a number of troubleshooting pages on tinternet but I didn't have time to deal with it before work so now I have a nice new paperweight until at least tonight but maybe the weekend when I can fine the time at home with my laptop to fix it

Should have used iCloud

If I can't get it to work I was thinking of that approach but presumably to back up 32GB of data via Wifi is a) going to take a while and b) means I have to pay to increase the size of my iCloud capacity as I think it is currently 5GB.

ETA - ok - upgrading to 50GB seems to cost only £0.79 a month so I will probably do that route and then at least I should have regular back ups too.

Yep, switching phones is the easiest thing in the world with everything in iCloud. Sign in (although now if your old phone is nearby it can magically use that to get you authenticated) and it just brings everything down in the background and it's all there just as it was before. Worth it too for the way it can manage storage on the device, like keeping lower resolution photos but pulling down originals if you start looking at them. Removes a lot of the need for extra device storage.

You can pool it within your family so we just pay for 200GB and share it.

XR has arrived and bloody hell it seems enormous after a couple of years with a SE.

As above, with iCloud it's the easiest thing ever. Turn new phone on. Phone asks you to hold your previous phone near it. Phones communicate with each other. Profile transfers to new phone. New phone then pulls down icloud back up. Fin.

Tried three times now to upgrade my iCloud to 50GB and it pops up with "Buy now", I click yes then nothing happens. This is starting to drive me nuts :(

Ok - so it was forcing my home address to my old address for some reason so I presume the card transaction was being declined. After several failed attempts to change it I logged on to my apple account on my work laptop to update it assuming that would override everything. Does seem to have updated it globally. It would be nice if, you know, it gave you some indication as to why it wasn't working rather than looking like it was working but the transaction actually not going through!

Anyway - backing up now, finally.

I prefer the old fashioned iTunes back up, took me an hour to back up 200gb and then another hour to shove it all in the new one.

Of course iTunes wouldn’t recognise the new phone either so I just updated the whole thing to OSX Mojave - can’t really blame anyone but myself for not bothering to upgrade that earlier.

Out of interest, why do you prefer a worse way of doing it?

Well people can't hack all your data from the internet for one - not sure that concern is worth the pain having just moved things across on the cloud.

Having said that I don't seem to have my old photos etc. so I'm not sure it has done a proper job.

Don’t use it on my phone as it’s obviously useless if I’m in a place without wifi or 4G. When my iPhone 7 started running out of capacity it started storing some of my music and notes on iCloud which was pretty useless whenever I was outside of London.

Does iCloud not work outside of London?

Are you lot really recommending iCloud? Apple throttle their server connections, it takes me about two to three weeks to get sync’d properly if I change an iDevice to the latest one. That’s with paying for extra iCloud storage where I put my photos so I only download compressed versions of data.

Apple are not as good as they used to be with their software and testing prior to launching a new product but it’s still much quicker to update the OS, update iTunes, back up an existing iDevice and then load the data onto a new one. It absolutely shouldn’t be that way but it’s miles better than waiting nearly a month for the cloud to pull its finger out it’s arse and give you your data back.

Storing all of your base model XS's 64GB on iCloud requires payment of a subscription, let alone the larger capacity models. Paying a subscription for storage is a bit like paying to keep tat at Big Yellow: very few people do it for a short period only. Either cut down your unwanted stuff or store it on your massive capacity backed-up server at home; don't commit to pay forever to keep it somewhere you'll never actually look at it

Having recently had to wipe and restore a relative's iPhone, I'm a huge fan of iCloud.

It's the kind of thing only Apple can do (at scale).

Yep - iCloud backup is far from ideal for me. None of my apps logged back in and some of them now seem to be completely borked.

Twitter didn’t load tweets until I logged in via their home page rather than the app.

Deliveroo won’t load any restaurants even though I have logged in and out online, reloaded the app, etc. Bit of a shambles really.

On the plus side the new XS is flippin great. Waiting a few years between upgrades definitely makes you appreciate how far the latest tech has come. iPhone 7 to XS feels a little like iPhone 4 to 7 IMO.
