'Remote control' screen for back seat

Post by Simon »

The nipper likes to watch a bit of Tee and Mo or Teletubbies if we're ever in the car down to the coast or whatever (particularly if we don't want him to nap). This is usually accomplished by clipping Deb's iPhone into a 'back of headrest' bracket in so that he can watch on iPlayer or whatever.

However, this is impractical as it needs her to do a rare reach-around (and she's not a fan of the reach-around) to choose whatever show or press 'next' every 10 minutes then clipping it back into the mount.

Surely there is a better solution? I'm not talking about a DVD player - it's not 1995 anymore. Something like a screen paired to an app on her phone where she can just select what she wants and sends it to the screen for him to watch, thus also freeing up her phone for 'normal' use (She's on Insta 37 hours a day).

I'm sure the uber-nerds will be along in a minute.

Sounds like you want a remote access app on your Mrs phone (Teamviewer, VNC) with an android tablet in front of the youngun.

Not sure if that forces you to run a wifi hotspot to tie the devices together or if you can bluetooth that sort of thing.

Trouble with Miracast/airplay is that you can’t do something else on the source device.

There are cheap 10+” displays that take HDMI, could hook up a phone to that (which you keep in the front, avoiding the reach-around) but again, leaves the device tied up.

Realistically how far away are you from switching to a high-back booster with the car seatbelt? Once they’re in one they can reach forward to control a screen themselves and you can just get a basic Kindle Fire or similar.
