Electric scooters
Electric scooters
Do we have any owners on here or anyone thinking about buying one after the announcement that legislation is to be "rushed" through to legalise them?
I have absolutely no use for one but I still find myself browsing them online and mentally choosing the one I would buy. I think it's just the pull of a new toy/gadget.

Re: Electric scooters
I had one on my amazon wish list for ages and I know someone who has one. Haven’t been that tempted though, given their dubious legality and I’m bound to crash in a painful and ridiculous manner. If the law’s changing then I might reconsider it.

Are these things actually any good for speed and range? What about hills and the like?

They’re fucking rapid, there’s a steep hill by imperial wharf station in London - I’ve seen people get off the overground and zoom up the hill at 20 mph out dragging the shit Piaggos

Just had a quick look, the range isn’t shit either, up to 27 miles on one

Re: Electric scooters
I’ve got a pretty old electric skateboard, maybe 4/5 years old - I never did more than 10 miles on it but it showed half battery at that point and I was happy enough going 10 mph on it - still significantly faster and more pleasurable than public transport in London. Paid for itself in a few months. I bought the skateboard over the scooter as it was less likely that police could tell what it was electric and never did get caught

Re: Electric scooters
Now down a google rabbit hole of electric skateboards. That sounds even more hair raising than an electric scooter.
I was never particularly confident on skis or a snowboard (though I could eventually get down the occasional black run on skis) so that could be terrifying.

Re: Electric scooters
It’s good fun and quite physical, you really feel it in your quads and hamstrings when you first start. I imagine a scooter is much more leisurely and the big wheels allow you can take more liberties with rough roads.

Re: Electric scooters
Oooh, what are the well regarded makes of these if I was going to consider a purchase for the 2 mile trip to the shop and back?
Erm, for my nephew obviously....

This one gets good reviews https://www.halfords.com/scooters/elect ... 86030.html
It’s the updated version of the one in the above pic.

New press release. Obviously they have a vested interest but still, interesting to see

Re: Electric scooters
Been looking at them for a while. Before shutdown my eldest would scoot to school with me walking (virtually power walking to keep up) and from September I’ll have the youngest too on a scooter.
Cruising along with them on the way then saving a few minutes blasting back home, then doing the opposite in the afternoon, is quite appealing.
Segway/Ninebot ES2 looking pretty good. I don’t need huge power or range.

I had a quick spin on a Smart one - just 100 yards up the road and back but it was fast enough for me to want a helmet
