My legs and/or head and/or other limbs

Post by NotoriousREV »

I’ve just bought a chainsaw and garden shredder to clear some crap out of the garden. If I still have all my body parts at the end of the week I’ll count myself lucky.

If the chainsaw doesn’t kill you the heat and humidity will.
How about not having a sig at all?

When you juggle them, just make sure you give enough of a flick to get a full rotation out of it before catching it.

Petrol. Only a 40cm bar but that’s big enough. It was £100 from Screwfix, which was cheaper than hiring a Husqvarna for the weekend.

I’m clearing the god awful leylandii some previous owners planted. They’re just taking over absolutely everything. I’m only taking out stuff that doesn’t look like it could destroy the house if I fell it the wrong way.

I’ve bought the PPE, too.

My dad managed to near chop his left hand off even with a puny electric one 30 odd years ago. Tree was down and he was chopping thr very last piece so he could take it all to the tip.

Went down thr middle of his hand from palm to lower forearm and miraculously missed all the blood vessels and tendons

Either get a proper face shield or as a minimum safety goggles, chainsaws spray a surprising amount of shit directly at your face

And if you're as allergic as my old man is to leylandii, a full hazmat suit over the top of it all.

Chainsaw trousers or you will chop your cock off.

I’ve used 18” petrol circular saws on inch thick steel while standing precariously, no problem.

Show me a chainsaw though and I get all nervous and decide to cut it by hand. I chopped down 2 12” thick trees in my parents garden plus a metre and a half of cherry beam because chainsaws give me the willies.

Just in case, put a tarp down as your blood will attract the foxes.

Dave!

Christ, this. I've had leylandii at a couple of my houses over the years, including the current one. The problem is that I usually cut them back in the summer, so naturally go for a t-shirt, only to find my arms end up looking like pizza sticks in the evening. That stuff is awful.

Ear defenders and safety glasses are fine .

We only ever wore all the gear if we were working on sites.

Make sure you keep the blade clean and well lubed though. Leylandii will gum up the chain in no time. Awful stuff.

I borrowed a weed whacker recently to clear some brush but forgot the mask so bought this...

For an occasional use, it’s perfect...

For those concerned 😉

Chainsaws terrify me so it’s taken until now for the desire to sort my shit show of a garden out to overcome the fear.

 I’m surprised with the amount of fear over then on here. I just wear ear protection and my normal glasses to keep the sawdust from going in my eye. As long as you know basic physics such as which way tension works and the dangerous parts of the blade you’ll be fine doing garden work. De-limbing and working in dense areas can be dangerous because if there’s lots of crap near your blade you can inadvertently catch something on the tip and kick back so be aware of the whole length of your blade and not just the bit that’s cutting.
You’ll need to re-tension your chain after 10-15 mins of use as it’s new and will stretch - some people think it looks cool to have it dangling an inch below the bar but they probably won’t have all their fingers for long.
Don’t forget the bar oil, I worked with an idiot once who burned out his saw in 10 minutes as he didn’t realise it needed that. You can just use vegetable oil if it’s more convenient and you don’t want to buy a large bottle as you don’t use much.

Luckily Screwfix’s suggestion engine didn’t let me forget the bar oil. I think fear of chainsaws is healthy.
