Two blokes on board, could be close to 1800kg laden in their safety clothes with camera etc. Still sounded inordinately high.

I can't see him quoting figures like that, after all the 917 had a bloke on board and camera equipment too.

Indeed - but they’re usually pretty anal about getting facts right, such as when they were talking about the Testarossa’s flat-12. I think the description of it as a 180-degree V12 is nonsense, because a vee engine describes the shape the cylinders make, but if Ferrari wanted to distinguish it from a boxer engine, fair enough.

IIRC the difference between a180deg V and a boxer is the way the pistons move.

On the V one side is in when the other is out whereas on a boxer both sides go in and out together.

Both Jobbo and Zed are correct.

I too think that calling something a “180Deg V” is teh stoopid ‘cos not a V. :geek:

I’m an episode or two behind - the Georgia one. They’re desperately trying to get some controversy again aren’t they! No one gives a shit any more though....

Yeah, it’s just a bit pathetic. They seemed to have stopped doing it in the last 2 episodes and they’re better for it.

Flat plane vs Cross plane, basically.

Can't you have a flat engine with a flat plane crank whose pistons share the same crank pin, i.e. a 180 degree vee with a flat crank but not a boxer as they don't have individual crank pins for each cylinder?

I dont believe you get flat-plane straight6's or v12s.

You can get flat-plane V12s, but they’re rare because they don’t work very well due to harmonic vibration. Aston Martin tried to make one, apparently.

But the difference between a “flat” engine and a “boxer” engine is cross plane vs flat plane. Or vice versa. Can never remember which way round it goes.

I dont see the answer to GGs question on that site. :?

A flat-plane 180deg v12 would need to have 3 cylinders firing at the same time. (I think - this is hard to visualise :? )

You can have a flat-plane crank on a vee engine and it isn’t called something different. It’s a stupid distinction to make isn’t it; why not use the well-known term ‘flat’ which distinguishes it from both a boxer and a normal 60-degree V12?

I happened to spend a little while last weekend trying to work out what distinction Yanks make between 4wd and AWD. It was when their examples contradicted their own definitions that I realised it was the usual nonsense.

Common usage vs definition. See also “literally”.
