Probably not a lot. A mate of mine has had 3 Phaetons (including a V10 diesel) and loves them.

With his first one (3.0 V6), the door bottoms started to bubble up with corrosion so he complained to VW, who replaced all 4 doors as a goodwill gesture and/or warranty (despite the car being old) but the bodyshop couldn’t match the paint to his satisfaction so eventually VW bought the car back off him and he bought a V10 diesel, which someone crashed into when it was parked up so the ins co wrote it off, then he bought another V6 petrol one.

What a world we live in if you can now buy a German luxobarge for a couple of grand and it not be a money pit. It’s as if we’ve become gods.

The V10 is a good engine. If the Phaeton is anything like my Touareg it'll need various suspension bits replaced but otherwise be fairly sound.

If I came across a silver one locally I'd be tempted to give it a go.

Surely if you were replacing all the doors you’d just respray the whole car?

It was a whole thing that went on for months. They sprayed the doors. Then they tried blending them in but he was never happy with it. I think they struggled matching the factory finish because it was higher quality than the usual stuff.

I can't remember how old his car was at the time, but it was old enough for me to be amazed that VW were bothering at all. He'd complained via the CEOs office to get what he wanted.

Some cool vehicles, but a shame the vast majority of them are autos.

Ooh, they have a 340R in!

Remind me to never, ever visit that place. I would come away with a Mini ERA Turbo at the very least...
