Finished my watch through, top 5 movies

1. Casino Royale
2. Goldfinger
3. Skyfall
4. Goldeneye
5. License to Kill

Daniel Craig is my favourite Bond, Roger Moore is my least favourite.
Hard to argue with that Top 5 really

Decent list, I've not watched them recently enough to be 100%, but I'm going (in no particular order:

you only live twice
license to kill
On her majesty's secret service
Goldeneye
Casino royale

Live and let die and view to a kill would be pretty high too - for "bonds I remember watching as a kid on tv".

As mentioned earlier I expected some nostalgia from the Moore movies as I watched them loads as a kid. Just didn’t like them now though, too silly.

License to kill was the surprise tbh. I never rated the Dalton movies before.

I always liked the random Benicio del Toro in it and the fairly graphic killing in the hyperbaric chamber. Dalton was a good bond and the films were quite gritty.

Yeah, I’d been trying to figure out where I’d seen that hyperbaric chamber scene for years. Kept thinking it was the abyss then being surprised when I watched it and it wasn’t there

Old Henry

I love a good western and this is a pretty good western all in all. There are a few cliches about the place - retired gunslinger looking for a quiet life etc. and is it now a Law that all modern Westerns MUST have moody Cello as the background music...

But Tim Blake Nelson's very solid as Henry. The other lead, Scott Haze's accent is difficult to follow but it has a good set-up and a nice little twist near the end (although I knew the history so saw it coming)

I'd give it a 7 man posse gang out of 10

The Dig

A film about archeology

Really enjoyed it

It's much better than I'm making it sound

Which is why I'm not in marketing

I thought it was ok (for a film staring RR and the rock), just like most of these films - a couple of scenes too long.
I thought it was watchably OK…

I liked the Indians Jones tribute, right down the the correct punch sound..
Bit late but watched this last weekend. Was a bit meh, but exactly what I'd ahve expected from a Rock/Reynolds film. My mind was suitably numbed by the end so it did its job I guess. THe Mrs thought it was boring as shit and she's a big Reynolds fan (she's from Wrexham).

Also watched The Adam Project the week before. I ejoyed that one. It probably helps that I like Reynolds, he's good at what he does, which is the same thing every time, but it works.

The Batman

I wanted to like this. I REALLY wanted to like this. Nolan's Batman was brilliant enough, and my first viewing of Dark Knight absolutely blew my mind, but it's fair to say that it fell short of expectations.

Firstly, it seems that each iteration of Batman must get darker and darker. If you follow the journey from Adam West, through Keaton, (I'll ignore Kilmer, Clooney and Affleck as I've just had lunch), to Bale then some would argue that the portrayal of Batman is getting closer to the comics. Those same people seem to think that Pattinson is 'peak comic alignment'. That doesn't make it a good version of Batman though.

I spent the first 45 minutes also wondering why the whole film had a cliched feeling to it, then I remembered that it had a feeling somewhere between 1987 Robocop and Tenet. I didn't like the main 4 note motif in the score either. Sorry, Schubert, but Zimmer just does it better.

Some other howlers:
Spoiler
  1. The metal collar 'locked' around the Riddler's neck in Arkham was so big that it could just be lifted off
  2. Batman getting electrocuted as he cut the wire in the stadium
  3. Alfred is just too young to have been Thomas Wayne's buttler.
  4. there seemed to be no 'urgency' and it was sacrificed for theatre when Batman appeared to help and stop the victim of the moment getting attacked - see the slow walk through the subway tunnel when the random was lynched getting of the train, or the 30 second engine start of the batmobile at the drop factory when Selina is attacked...
  5. Sorry, I'm just not a Pattinson fan at the best of times, but he looked to depressed, too broken to be an authentic billionaire vigilanty.
  6. As this was a reboot I expected to see how Batman became Batman, rather like 'Begins' 17 years ago....
Somehow it gets an 8.0 on IMDB. I give it a 6.5 at best.

Out of interest, have you watched The Lighthouse with Pattinson and Will DaFoe?

I think it might change your opinion about Pattinson - it certainly did for me.

And while I liked The Batman, the Lighthouse is on another level, on every level.

Robert Pattinson has become one of my favourite actors over the last few years.

The Lighthouse, High Life, Good Time, The King all great movies.

The Lighthouse is absolutely an experience.

Quiet night, curtains drawn, lights off, phone off, and get your head messed with.

I haven't, but now I'm torn as I like DaFoe. Looks quite heavy going. Maybe I'll start it at the weekend.

I watched half the Lighthouse ln the flight to Aus, I keep meaning to go back to finish it.

Pattinson's character showing unrealistic levels of self control when getting an eyeful...

Yeah, Pattinson has done some really interesting work post-Twilight, as has Kristen Stewart.

We saw the new Dr Strange movie at the weekend. I'd only seen the first trailer so it wasn't quite the trippy multiverse-hopping fun ride I was expecting. If anything, it turned in to a bit of a standard goody v baddie showdown although there were some nice horror touches from Sam Raimi. A solid 3/5. Mrs Mike had a nice snooze though and the hot dogs were really good, so that's a positive review for The Dominion's facilities.

The new Avatar teaser trailer before it was utter bobbins though.
Cheers,

Mike.

Not a movie review, but we also saw Derren Brown last week on his Showman tour. It was every bit as good as we hoped and it blew the childrens' minds. Incredibly entertaining, funny, sad, though-provoking, life affirming and all wound together in to a great "show" for want of a better word.
Cheers,

Mike.

TG2:Mav, me and the wife both enjoyed. Utter nonsense just like the OG, fine by me. I think they shoehorned in every quotable line from TG, too.

First time out together at the movies, without the kids, in 15 years...

Top Gun: Maverick. Saw it on the IMAX and it was utterly tremendous, escapist fun. Best film ever. Whole family loved it.
