Yeah, or more particularly Android. I think it was my brother who said it's in the Android ToS. But scary though, and also a waste of data and battery.

He's clearly an idiot.
The Evo forum really is a shadow of its former self. I remember when the internet was for the elite and now they seem to let any spastic on

It's easy to turn off OK Google detection. However, does that stop it targeting ads based on background voice recognition?

This isn’t an android phone tho, it’s a Windows PC

Also, where in the TOS does it say, “we listen to background chat”?

In fact, Google deny this completely (in 2016)
Google responds

The major tech firms absolutely reject such an idea.

Google said it "categorically" does not use what it calls "utterances" - the background sounds before a person says, "OK Google" to activate the voice recognition - for advertising or any other purpose. It also said it does not share audio acquired in that way with third parties.

Its listening abilities only extend to activating its voice services, a spokesperson said.

Well, I'm entirely satisfied with that response.

I mentioned to my other half that my old Alpine Lowe shell jacket thing was no longer waterproof, within a short period of time NikWax ads appeared on my FB feed. Not sure if my phone has defaulted to listening.

Yes, but what if he also had an Android phone in his room?

I’ve noticed the cunts are automatically subscribing me to random YouTube channels. They seem to be large organisations too such as British Airways and last month it was Trivago so I reckon they must be paying Google for this as it’s a much more direct form of advertising having it come up in the subs list.

A quick google (ironic...) shows I’m not the only one.
How about not having a sig at all?

I do find the general uproar at this stuff amusing. Like the sweethearts who were surprised that their data had been raped by Facebook.

I think it's bollocks!

At home I have a Google Home, Home Mini, Pixel 2 XL, laptops, tablets, etc... all running Google with OK Google capabilities and I have spent many days in front of various devices making statements about wanting to buy a new shed. I have never googled sheds so there's no history there and i still haven't received any targeted advertising. That's enough proof for me

I mentioned this on the old forum.

I've got WAY too much circumstantial spam emails to believe they aren't listening.

I should (as an Network Engingeer) actually run Wireshark or some such to test it.

But TBH - I don't give a fuck.

I was convinced my device was listening the other day when I saw an ad for car trade insureance the day after I'd been talking about it at work. Then realised when we were talking about it we were on the shop floor where it's noisy enough to have to shout at someone a meter away so there's no way a phone in my pocket would have been able to hear me speaking at normal volume over radio headsets.

I'm sure a lot of the time you're more aware of the ads because they happen to be about something you've been talking about recently and ignor a lot of others.
Cheers, Harry
