What's the thing he's using on the steering wheel? Do the race one have gears?

Looks like a super kart. Only played them in video games but that was enough to make me realise I don’t want to ever sit in a real one

There's a clutch paddle on the left behind the steering wheel and stick on the right side to change gear on a crash gearbox.

About 8 of us bought them (125cc) 10 years or so ago, they were rapid and great fun. We'd rock up at various races around the country and a couple of my mates were very competitive, me not so much.

I surprised it's not a bigger thing as the costs were reasonable.

Enjoyed that, particularly that he checked the accuracy of the meter too!

See the odd gearbox kart at blackbushe from time to time, usually the 250 twins, but they are too fast for the small track there. They are just insane.

I expect fear of death puts a lot of people off. Karts feel quick at 50mph, I've seen geared karts on full size tracks and they look pretty mental!

As far as my German stretches it was a NATO test to figure out how to launch jets from any field if the runways had been destroyed. It was canned because of cost and "other issues" (presumably the large rocket booster landing and bouncing into whatever was in the way).

Most militaries have a name for it, something like Jet Assisted Take Off or Rocket Assisted Take Off.

The US tried it with C130s, the idea being that if you could take off and land a C130 in a much much shorter distance, it would be far more versatile.

A distance like that of a stadium. Ideally the one just over the road from the Iranian US Embassy. Because helicopters suck apparently. Or at least C130s with massive rockets strapped to them suck less.

Operation Credible Sport was the name and it's as fucking bonkers and awesome as that brief outlay sounds.

And yes, I did say landings.

They didn't go quite as well. I don't think anyone really managed to make it work properly.

And yes, Ekranoplans are also fucking awesome.

I remember seeing that on discovery 8-)

I think the C130 sometimes used rockets but in order to take off with a greater payload.
