iPhone 6S - Charging issue...

Post by dinny_g »

... and unsurprisingly, the Geniuses at the Genius bar don't seem to know for certain. Lots of try this, try that etc

Basically, the phone will only charge in one of 2 ways - plugged into the desk at the Apple Shop (unfortunate) and plugged into my Docking Station at work. In the following situations, the phone will only maintain the current charge level but not increase the level of charge

Plugged into the Wall with genuine Apple cables and plugs - Won't charge
Plugged into the Wall with iffy Chinese knock off cable and plugs - Won't charge
Plugged into Battery Pack running 1A - Won't charge
Plugged into Battery Pack running 2.1A - Won't charge
Plugged into the Car's USB Port - Won't charge
Plugged into Car's Apple Car Play port - Won't charge
Plugged into my Laptop off charge - Won't charge
Plugged into my Laptop on charge - Won't charge

The genius is suggesting a new battery (why ? It charges and hold a charge and the diagnostic has it running at 89%) or doing a full restore as a brand new phone (which I don't want to try unless I have to as it'll take a age to re-download 100GB of music)

anyone come across similar - any suggestions ?

It can't be a co-incidence that the only places that seem to work are places where the current will be balanced out across several outputs

You've picked the fluff out of the Lightning port I assume?

That.

Mine gets stupidly fussy when the port is bunged up, like only charging if the cable is a certain way up even though they're supposed to work both ways.

Straighten a paper clip and lightly scrape any fluff out, if it is that

That was trip #1 to the Genius bar. They even had a little rotating brush like a nano car wash roller to clean it out.

It's not fluff - like I said 100% success rate on the docking station, 0% success rate anywhere else.

I'm sure you've done this, but you didn't state it...

Have you tried different cables?

several different cables, 2 genuine Apple items, 4 or 5 random ones.
3 different types of adapter plugs - one Apple, one Samsung, one BOSE
several different locations - our house, other house, work etc.

Edit - I did mention dodgy Chineese cables... :)

Get some switch/contact cleaner. Spray a bit into your lightening port and clean inside using a cocktail stick. Repeat a few times. Then clean your lightening cable ends with the same stuff.

I’m not sure I could clean it better than the chemicals and brushes the Apple store used to be honest.

It really isn’t fluff you know... ;)

Have you laid the phone flat on its back, and then pushed it 6” to the left?

I think the answer is to be found in whether Finance Gap is, strictly speaking, an Insurance...

I know it's not fluff :)

I have this with my work iPhone (6) and my O/H's iPhone (7). The issue we have is that when you keep plugging it in one of the pins on the plugs becomes tarnished - you can often see the 'scorching' after a year or two of use. Ditto one of the connectors inside the iPhone. I use some contact cleaner to clean it up. Can't hurt to try?

Are you sure you actually bought the phone in the first place, check if they actually took the deposit.
