I'm conflicted about this. I genuinely couldn't give a fuck how close someone passes to me as long as they don't hit me. Cars have passed me so close on London roads that their wing mirrors have almost skimmed my arm and I've also sliced my way through spaces between moving vehicles with only a few millimetres of clearance. Having spent 15 years dicing it up in Central London, I ride very confidently with almost disturbing hyper vigilance, which mainly comes from being strapped to a spine board after a car took me out from the side and launched me across a roundabout when I was a teenager. Snapped the bottom bracket in half.

HOWEVER, not all cyclists are as confident. Cycling is good for people and planet and should be encouraged. One of the most common reasons that normals don't want to cycle is because they see London roads as dangerous. Any action which publicly sends a message to drivers to be more careful around cyclists is a good thing. Therefore, I personally wouldn't make any fuss about that pass, however, if it helps to send a message which makes a handful of other drivers give cyclists a bit more space, then it's a good thing.

That driver is a massive bellend though, he didn’t need to have the fine as was offered a driver awareness course and also failed to deal with the fixed penalty notice he received instead, hence the big fine. My worry is the cyclists who get up in the morning wanting to have an argument with a car driver, where you give plenty of space but they decide you didn’t and causes a load of fuss over nothing- and probably wins

I'm definitely less concerned about that if I'm in town in traffic which is moving at sub-30mph. I'm not going that much slower, you get time to react.

On a country road where a car overtakes at 60mph and brushes your elbow it's a different matter. It's not just that the rider feels unsafe, it is now an offence in itself. The driver has only himself to blame for not overtaking safely and then ignoring the NIP and follow up. The full story just goes to show what an arrogant idiot he is.

I don't cycle a huge amount, but from my experience as well, I tend to get more space from cars in the city doing 30 or under then outside of it. Especially if I cycle up Ports Down hill, some cars barely give any space, and they're often doing 40 plus.
