From yesterday's Ukraine update from the Institute for the Study of War:
Russian forces may be preparing to conscript Ukrainian citizens amid continuing recruitment challenges. The Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) reported on April 20 that Russian occupation forces are planning to hold pseudo-referendums in occupied Zaporizhia and Kherson Oblasts to declare a forced mobilization and “throw ‘mobilized’ Ukrainians to the hottest parts of the front."

WTF ? Instead of executing the civilians themselves after flattening their homes they're going to paint targets on them send them to the front and hope the Ukrainian army does it for them ?

But what are they then going to do? Immediately surrender themselves back to their own countrymen along with any kit they've been given.

Or am I missing something?

I drove to Manchester and back last weekend - I probably did 70 mph for 10% of it. Traffic, Roadworks, Variable Speed Limits, Dicks etc.

There seem to be more of land slips in rail lines, and fires at Russian military supporting infrastructure in Russia lately.

I'm sure it's just a coincidence.

France having near 40% of thier vote for an authoritarian Putin loving toady ain't great, however....

Point is, Le Pen didn't get in and the French for the most part saw sense. The predicted wave of populist governments hasn't happened which doesn't bode well for the shower of shit we've got in charge at the moment.
If you get all wobbly-lipped about the opinion of Internet strangers, maybe it's time to take a bath with the toaster as you'll never amount to sh1t anyway.

In the UK 40% of the vote is a huge landslide victory.

Voter abstention was 28%, the highest in 50 years (which tells you a lot about what the French thought of their 2 choices). So Le Pen really only had 30% "of the vote".

Great thread reported from the eastern front.

I particularly like the comment about them referring to Chechen soldiers as Tiktok soldiers.

US has passed thier lend-lease act for Ukraine, which basically means that they can send almost any military aid to them without having to run it through Congress.

Which is probably a good thing, as the ten 'no' votes were all the Loony Wing of the republican party, who now look very, very exposed.

It's $33bn dollars, or half the annual Russian military budget.

Or once you take, from all evidence, skimming and corruption into account, the actual annual Russian military budget.

So that's about to make things pretty spicy. Ukraine wants 155mm GPS guidance based howitzer shells to keep the recent donations of artillery from Sweden firing?

US military might have 20k shells they can spare that are getting closer to the end of thier rated service life?

No need to vote on it, it's just packed up and air freighted over on a military cargo plane.

I suspect Russia is about to seriously rue the day that Putin has a hissy fit and lashed out because his micropenis wouldn't get up for even the strongest animal porn he could find*.

*that he was polling in a mediocre fashion and decided to try to fuck about with what he considered to be a militarily weak country he could stomp in a week, to get some votes

It's quite frustrating seeing what I'll politely describe as 'the usual suspects' complaining about $33bn being sent to Ukraine, and saying 'uh, why aren't we cancelling student debt' or 'solving homelessness' or 'building the border wall to protect from the invasion of immmigrants' (yes, that's a real argument being used while an actual sovereign US allied nation is being actually invaded by the armed forces of an actual US hostile nation, by a lot of people, including sitting US senators)

Well guys, maybe speak to your representatives and each other about your annual $600-800bn military spend - every year - which is more than the next ten to fifteen or so countries combined, including China, which is caused entirely by your onanistic worship of the military at every level of American society.

Of which $33bn over the next six to nine months is like winning a grand on the horses and buying a big takeaway pizza - it's barely touching the sides.

The best one I see is people 'just asking questions' about why they don't feed the poor with the $33bn.

Mate, do you know where a large chunk of the worlds grain comes from? It's from the two nations currently at war you absolute fucking clown, with the aggressor fairly reliably being shown to be raiding grain stores destined for export.

Helping Ukraine kick Russia the fuck out of their lands with their tail between their legs will literally help prevent a massive increase in basic food commodities prices/shortages - shortages and price increases that will kill millions in developing countries and will cause millions in the developed world to slip into food poverty. Would they rather have bread a a dollar a loaf, or a stimmy check so they can buy a four dollar loaf?

I genuinely don't understand how so many people can be so wilfully ill educated on the absolute basics of geopolitics.

Can we blame TikTok? I want to blame TikTok. (don't tell Gavster)

Russia is continuing to pull never-ending "WTF ?" rabbits from the hat. From BBC:
On Wednesday people held a pro-Ukraine demonstration in the southern city of Kherson, currently occupied by the Russians.

It came after reports that Russia planned to hold a referendum in the region on forming an independent republic. Russian state media has quoted a local official saying the area would start using the Russian rouble on 1 May.

I wrote a massive long screed about Russia and how fucked it is, but I think it was a result of having to overhear the conflict being discussed by people who wouldn't challenge my neighbours cat when it comes to knowledge of basic international geopolitics and statecraft.

Suffice to say, Russia has fucked itself hard in every way, and there's only so long it can keep this up.
