DANGEROUS REAR WHEEL DRIVE

Post by dan »

A car I originally honda converted 8 years ago, now on its third owner since then and living in Hong Kong, has been destroyed. Thankfully the occupants got out fine.

VTEC kicked in yo.

(IIRC Dan tweeks that out actually so it's just a very high specific output engine, but I've probably remembered that wrong; Dan, tell me how I'm an idiot)

Wide open throttle, slippy road, no steering input and a limited slip diff spinning both wheels very quickly. Simple as that.

Beany, I have no idea what you're on about

You can't 'tweak out' the vtec mechanism, you can engineer it out completely but thats a very extreme way of getting a tiny gain in power (like i've done with my own engine). You can tune out the noticeable jump in torque when the vtec 'kicks in' which is what I normally do, so the power delivery is very linear.

In this case its just a standard 2l k20 with a few bolt on mods doing 220hp and 160lb ft in 730 kilo car. What could possibly go wrong.

Some discussions on other forums whether this was a toe-link failure. Would you do toe-links as part of the conversion?

ETA - that said ive watched it to the end now and both rear wheels look straight.

Wow, that's wild, a serious impact too, incredibly lucky that they're OK and hope they weren't too sore afterwards. It's always interesting working out how these happened and after re-watching carefully, frame by frame, I've analysed the footage to see what caused the sudden change in direction. There are lots of potential reasons that could be at fault, such as mechanical failure, or oil on the road, however, I'm 99% sure that it was the cyclist's fault.

If you zoom in real tight, and say aloud “enhance” before viewing each frame, then employ a translator, it is clear the driver said the equivalent of “watch this” just before it stepped out….

Yep, doesn’t look anything more sinister than too much throttle for the conditions to me.

Yes, as i've posted on multiple facebook threads where people have immediately cited toe link failure as the cause, that was very much a 'watch this' moment. Wide open throttle, wet road, LSD and no attempt to counter steer.

Toe links get a bad name because of shit like this.
