Do you phonetic alphabet?

Post by mik »

Prompted by a tweet. I learned young - possibly my dad? Made sure my kids learned it. Mrs mik always sniggers when I use it - like she thinks I am trying to pass myself off as in the SAS or something

Not taught at school (at least not memorably) so I have spent a decade on UK phone calls ad-hocing "Y for.... Yellow, N for.... Nice"

It is rather unmanning.

I know I learned it in scouts but I just tried to run through it and only got as far as F. Shows how useful it’s been to me I guess

I learnt it when I worked in a call centre at 19. Handy for confirming vehicle reg numbers at the time. Been a while since I've used it, but can remember most of them.

This might be one that only @Beany and I can relate to, but growing up on the proper north of the UK, I had to take "navigation" as a subject in 1st year of high school where we learned things like this; how to tie knots; morse code; make a bosun's chair and the teacher who was affectionately known as Para Handy.

You also had to go out on his wee boat with him as part of the course curriculum.
Cheers,

Mike.

Same here.

@Ascender I think your school might have been posher than mine, I don't recall doing orienteering in High School, specifically, but I did do some - perhaps in scouts as per Zed.

But I mostly learned it in callcentre work because as per Brannen, it made things much, much easier.

It can be handy, but you always end up sounding like this guy

I once had someone read something out to me and they said

"That's A for Alpha and B for, err, Bee"

Which didn't help very much :)

@Beany Thurso High School! Was there from 1st year to 3rd year which must have been 88-90 or thereabouts?

I was Wick High School, and Thurso got far more of the grants for stuff like that because Thurso was posher than Wick.

That said, my memories of 1st to 3rd year are hazy as fuck for various terrifying psychological reasons, so I might have done some of that - I honestly could be getting scouts and high school mixed up.

I do but will inevitably get half way through my registration and forget what N stands for and substitute in something ludicrous like “N for ..ah… Norfolk”.

Which is remarkable as my registration doesn’t change that frequently.
