No F1 thread?
Re: No F1 thread?
Wow, is Russell not the reserve driver for Merc? * I agree, would be brilliant to see him get a race or two and see how he stacks up against Bottas. No pressure, new car which I think he has spent a day in testing so if he gets close, he looks good. If he beats him surely he has to be looking at a Mercedes seat in 2022. Fingers crossed for Lewis being back and fit ASAP though.
* apparently Stoffel Vandoorne and Esteban Gutierrez are the team's reserve drivers.

Stoffell Vandorne is the reserve driver. You couldn't have a reserve driver who was contracted to drive for another team.Gavin wrote: ↑Tue Dec 01, 2020 8:25 am Wow, is Russell not the reserve driver for Merc? * I agree, would be brilliant to see him get a race or two and see how he stacks up against Bottas. Re: No F1 thread?
It'll be tough for any driver to come in and beat Bottas in a car that he's now so familiar with. Max will be rubbing his hands together though!
Re: No F1 thread?
Merc F1 just left me a voicemail. Will call them back later.
Re: No F1 thread?
What do you mean? The reserve drivers won't have done anywhere near as many laps.
Re: No F1 thread?
IYou could be right, but GR is a Mercedes Jr driver so there could easily be a clause that allows him to jump out to the senior team as required. I am pretty sure there have been similar contract clauses in the past with Junior Drivers but it could easily be old age playing tricks on my mind.Zonda_ wrote: ↑Tue Dec 01, 2020 8:40 amStoffell Vandorne is the reserve driver. If you were Merc, would you take GR or SV or EG? I was always surprised about Stoffel as he was lightning in the junior categories but Alonso annihilated him.
Re: No F1 thread?
SV would be the safer bet for one weekend as he's familiar with the car.

I'm not sure what you're disagreeing with me about?
Re: No F1 thread?
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: No F1 thread?
Surely it has to be GR, he knows the team & their procedures. It's the perfect audition for 2022, unless of course he's not quite as good as he thinks he is.

Re: No F1 thread?
The only advantage in being a reserve driver is knowing the steering wheel layout and having an edge over the car set up. Id wager both are pretty useless when you’ve barely driven a F1 car in years. Fortunately the Bahrain oval shouldn’t be too physical.

Re: No F1 thread?
He has had a few decent drives but nothing outstanding. Possibly helpful that he has a Billionaire father. Sad to see championship winners shining on track then being shunted into Formula E or WEC due to money, hopefully budget caps will allow teams to pick drivers on merit in the future.
