For the ftao of coffee machine owners

Post by Gavin »

My filter coffee machine is leaking from the bottom, through some wiring it appears so am going to retire it before it cause serious problems.

It is a Russell Hobbs which is only barely out of it's guarantee. We had a very basic Krups one that lasted a decade.

Had a look and £400 for a bean to cup Krups.

Anyone bought anything (not pod) for £100 or ideally under they are getting good service from?

I’ve had a delonghi espresso machine for about 5 years. Has stood up to daily use and it cost £125 in the Boxing Day sale iirc.

I also recently got an aeropress and it’s a great piece of kit for £30.

Does the espresso maker make filter coffee too?

Non, that’s what I use the aeropress for.

If you want a machine with a jug I’ve heard good things about these

Cafetiere and a kettle has served me well for years.

That is some machine. I am wondering whether I need to re-evaluate my budget.

Part if does think simple may be a better idea but £50 or £60 every 2 and a bit years is galling.

I've been using an aeropresss to replace espresso for about nine years now.
This week I replaced the rubber plunger part that had worn for the first time, £6 delivered.

Could not recommend them enough.

Ditto. Using mine for the daily morning coffee hit. Makes a good brew.

Aye, it's not quite espresso but it's good for making a big mug of deceptively strong coffee

My opinion about it is that if you're going to the effort to make proper coffee then you might as well buy decent kit to make it. Obviously you can go too far and anyone spending four figures on coffee machines and burr grinders to make coffee at home is a mug .

A couple of hundred quid to get some stuff that'll last and make consistently good coffee is worthwhile though.

Hario V60 here. Pact will sell you some coffee and a starter kit for £15. Spend the rest on a grinder.

This. £400 for a machine or £30 for an Aeropress that makes equally as good coffee.

On the subject of the fantasticness of Aeropress coffee, does anyone here do the inverted press stage for the crema? After scalding myself once trying it I just scrape the crema off with a spoon now.

I don't go for all that nonsense, I just make sure I've got decent pressure applied when I plunge, that gives a fair result for what is only a morning coffee, at the end of the day.

I have had an aeropress for 10 years or so now and used it back when I used to work on site in an office...
They are great for that. I tried the inverted method once.

I didn't try again.

At home I have a Delonghi Elletta bean to cup machine. It's not cheap but it's great.

Someone bought me a Nespresso machine when I moved to uni accommodation. Didn't use it for 7 years until the NHS got me addicted to caffeine as a cure for headaches over the past 3-4 years.
It's fucking awful though, now I have to have coffee in the morning and one late afternoon otherwise I just feel shit.
How about not having a sig at all?

I used to used an aeropress at work, inverted of course, and it was great if you weren’t allowed your own electrical stuff on site.

I’ve also got three delonghi bean-to-cup machines :) Gavster had one so I bought one too. It was great so I bought another one for work, at Army HQ where we got away with having it in the kitchen. Then I bought a third one to keep at my parents’s house.
