Explosion in Beirut
Re: Explosion in Beirut
Makes things like the Tsar Bomba seem as utterly ridiculous as they are.
Hopefully the numbers of hurt are inflated by doom lingering press and the reality is a lot more optimistic.
Dave!

Re: Explosion in Beirut
Apparently it was a load of sodium nitrate that had been confiscated and was being stored.
They use that I'm solid rocket boosters.
Very nasty stuff...

Re: Explosion in Beirut
Ammonium nitrate, reportedly. Same stuff used by the Oklahoma bomber.
He used some 2.5tons of this.
This is being reported as more like 2500 tons....

Re: Explosion in Beirut
Ammonium nitrate is just fertiliser- But it forms half the ingredients of ANFO explosives (ammonium nitrate/fuel oil), this was the favourite of the ira for car bombs
The Oklahoma bomber used ANNM- ammonium nitrate/nitro methane which is more potent, but basically the same principle, it’s just needs something to get it going

Re: Explosion in Beirut
Also if it’s been confiscated for several years that creates its own problems, explosives tend to become increasingly more unstable as time goes on
Re: Explosion in Beirut
There is very much speculation abound.
Understandable given the images but speculation nonetheless.

Re: Explosion in Beirut
Entirely speculation - which is fine for us, chatting bollocks in here.
This however....
...is incredibly dangerous.
Looks like he adlibbed (earlier) that he thought it looked like an attack based on his in depth knowledge of Michael Bay films, then bullshitted to get himself out of a hole.
Blithering fucking thundercunt.

Re: Explosion in Beirut
It does work both ways, to be fair.
Re: Explosion in Beirut
Now seeing reports of what the stuff actually was- 2750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate that was unloaded from an impounded ship in 2013, so looks like confiscated fertiliser- apparently stores unsafe for that amount of time. just have to wait and see if anyone takes responsibility or if it’s just a horrendous accident
Re: Explosion in Beirut
All of the people on the internet who shared their expertise on virus control methodologies have now switched to sharing their expertise on explosion causes and sources, and the appropriate storage controls associated with explosive materials. Which is good.
Re: Explosion in Beirut
The while thing sounds like a mix of local authority incompetence and horribly bad luck to me.
Or it was a MOAB dropped by a pigeon, one of the two.

Re: Explosion in Beirut
some of the video clips emerging are staggering...

Re: Explosion in Beirut
A lot of people saying the initial blast smoke is the wrong colour for ammonia nitrate
Cheers, Harry
Re: Explosion in Beirut
Fucking hell, it might be the lens or just the scale of it, but if those are lorries parked in the background that crater looks hundreds of feet wide.
Re: Explosion in Beirut
The concrete building alongside the crater must have deflected some of the blast from the city, staggering amount of damage though.
Re: Explosion in Beirut
Very true John...
Anyone know what that building was ?? Looks like stores of some kind.
there's footage on the Guardian site from out on the water behind this building - you can almost see the whole structure deform under the blast...

Re: Explosion in Beirut
Silos. And undoubetdly had a significant bearing on reducing the area of damage
Re: Explosion in Beirut
Unfortunately, that was also a lot of the local grain storage, and that port is where the country gets 80% of it's grain from according to reports.
So economic issues, coronavirus, sanctions causing food shortages anyway, and now a huge chunk of their food import structure is fucked.
Lebanon is not going to be having a good rest of the year.
Edit: Quicky checked latest headlines, some 300,000 homeless - christ.
