No gin thread?

Post by Orange Cola »

There must be a few gin drinkers here. I’ll start with my findings over the past (nearly) two years since I started drinking it

Favourites

Shakespeare distillery standard gin
Brockmans
Monkey 47
Tobermory
The gin I created for my birthday
Whitley Neill blackberry* (odd one out here)
Caorunn
Leamington on parade
Adnams Copper house (standard and pink)

Very good ones

Whitley Neill rhubarb and ginger & Parma violet
Brighton gin
One other which I can’t remember :?
Masons lavender

Ok ones

Shakespeare distillery mulberry
Bombay sapphire
Tanquery
Whitley neill raspberry
Saddlers pesky blinders spiced gin
Warwickshire gin co (everything else bar Leamington on parade)
Aviator gin

Rubbish ones

Cotswold gin (actually find it quite bad, don’t get the hype)
Hendricks
Gordon’s
Beefeater

I’m with you on not really liking the basic London dry gins, other than as bases for cocktails where the more complex flavourings are unnecessary.

I’m right with you on Caorunn but I’m a bigger fan of Gin Mare - changes subtly in favour year to year but it’s the punchiest of those Mediterranean style gins.

Honourable mention for Plymouth navy strength.

I went to the Manchester Gin and Rum festival a couple of years ago and sampled a few. Citadelle was my favourite, been meaning to order a bottle actually. Don't know if it's actually a good one though, I just liked it.

I've tried and tried but can't stand the stuff. Same with the tonic. I've given up now and stick to Rums.

I was a big fan of Portobello Road gin. Quite Dry with a little citrus sweetness. Very easy to drink, I could finish a bottle in one sitting.

If you want to treat yourself, I’d recommend Isle of Harris gin. It uses kelp as one of the botanicals and it’s very good.
An absolute unit

My favourite gin is Adnams’ Copper House. I’m also enjoying Ophir currently.

Really do not recommend Spanking Roger which my wife brought back from Gibraltar. Rough.

Whilst I generally prefer rum, I agree with both Brockmans and Caorunn. Botanist is also great and I got gifted a bottle of Didsbury a while back which is also pleasant.

Some excellent suggestions, I’m going to try and track down some Harris and more Tobermory gins...!

How did I forget that when I use their glasses to drink from?! I’m updating the list, their pink gin is very nice too.

The other half is the same, I tried for ages but only recently got her into it, she drinks it with lemonade at 4:1 and really enjoys that.

Another vote for Ophir, I see Ophir, Caorunn and Gin Mare as similar in many ways.

As has been mentioned Harris is very nice (with a good quality neutral tonic and a slice of grapefruit), and sufficiently different from the usual junipery types to make it worthwhile as a "premium" drink. Otherwise, I struggle to justify £30-40 a bottle for stuff with only an arguable improvement over Bombay (IMO the yardstick by which other gins are measured)

I’ve just been on Amazon looking for Isle of Harris and scored the last bottle of Brockmans on Prime for £27 instead!
