Have you seen this about a couple being turned away from Malta as they had jabs from this batch?

TUI's advice states: 'Whilst the UK remains on Malta's red list, entry will not be allowed if the vaccine batch on your certificate is from one of the following - 4120Z001, 4120Z002, 4120Z003.

'Please check your vaccine batch before you travel.'

Unbelievable

That's the India made AZ which hasn't been approved in the EU.

Because the EU isn't getting any supply from there so they don't need the certification

Doesn't seem right if they have to turn away millions of potential visitors to the EU from around the world because of a lack of certification

Exactly. EU being wankers. Who would imagine that?

If the vaccine manufacturer hasn't filled out the necessary paperwork for the EU certification of the batches of their vaccines which come from India, I'm not sure how much of it is the fault of the EU.

That's my understanding of it anyway

Preventing the vaccine from being administered to EU citizens without the necessary paperwork - fine

Preventing visitors from entering the EU if they're received the Covidsheld instead of Vaxzevria (which the EU agree, are identical) - wankers

Note that it's isn't the AZ vaccine technically - it's a licensed copy for want of a better description, hence it needs its own certification.

And it's happening all over, not just the EU and not just the SII/OAZ vaccine. I'd not be at the front of the queue to defend the EU over anything, but in this instance it's not unreasonable.

The AZ vaccine is made in a number of factories over Europe and the UK, some not technically AZ factories themselves, but contractors. What makes one of the vaccines from these contractors within the EU a 'AZ' vaccine, whereas the one from India merely a 'licensed copy'? It's the same thing.

Because they're manufactured for AZ under contract - AZ controls the production still. The SII one isn't. It's manufactured by SII.

Yes, they're the same. But if MWB motors wanted to start selling 3-series copies but with a pink battenburg emblem, you'd expect Euro NCAP to still insist they smash them into some walls first before allowing them to be sold wouldn't you? You wouldn't simply expect them to take it on trust that it's a carbon copy. That's a very simplistic take, but essentially what the issue is.

The difference here though is they're not licensing it for use in the EU just that it can be recognised on their vaccine passport so you'd think they could take a more light touch approach or say that if a third country (or even the WHO in this case) has approved its use then it can be recognised for the purposes of the EU passport - even if they won't authorise you to stick it in a Belgian or Frenchman's arm.
