Well it's been a couple of years, but it didn't really get any worse in the coupe of times I've been up. Yes there's traffic, but there's also so much good stuff when you're on a proper trip. One of the hire cars I ended up with a few years ago in NZ was a Rav-4. I found it better in every way over a Qashqai, particularly the build quality. Dunno if they'll be in range of your budget though.
